Reliable journo says Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is going nowhere in January.
Guglielmo Vicario moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, joining from Empoli as a replacement for Hugo Lloris. He started off well at White Hart Lane, and was instrumental in the Europa League success under Ange Postecoglou last season.
The Italian international is a solid shot-stopper and has produced some memorable moments, including a couple in the Europa League final against Manchester United back in May. But, he has also made a catalogue of errors during his time at the club, negating excellent performances, and the latest one came against Fulham.
Guglielmo Vicario gifted Harry Wilson a goal in Fulham’s 2-1 win at Tottenham last weekend, which led to fans from some quarters booing and jeering the Spurs No.1 during the game. It turned out to be a costly error that led to the Lilywhites’ defeat in front of their fans. Now, Tottenham have made a decision on the 29-year-old’s future amid intense speculation.

Tottenham make decision on Guglielmo Vicario ahead of January window
Now, according to Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham want to continue keeping their faith in Vicario amid his recent errors and are extremely unlikely to part ways with him during the winter transfer window. They believe losing their No.1 midway through the campaign would be destructive to the team’s success.
“I don’t see a move in January, no chance of that,” Pete O’Rourke exclusively revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
“He’s obviously Tottenham’s number one keeper. Tottenham won’t want to lose him midway through the season as well. In the summer, that remains to be seen if there’s other goalkeepers out there available that Tottenham could bring in to become number one, then something could happen with Vicario.
“But look, right now obviously he got a bit of flak from the fans after that mistake against Fulham. He held his hands up, he knew it was a mistake.
“But, for me, I think he’s been a solid enough goalkeeper for Tottenham. He’s a very good shot stopper. There are probably a few question marks over him from crosses and set-pieces, corners, long throws, etc.
“I don’t think Tottenham want to be chopping and changing their goalkeeper mid-way through the season. So, I would expect him to remain at the club until the summer.”
Tottenham scouring the market for a potential new No.1 next season
Despite Vicario’s mixed fortunes at Tottenham, his stock in Italy remains high. This has been evident through AC Milan and Inter Milan’s interest in him, and as a result, the North Londoners have already identified potential replacements.
Bart Verbruggen of Brighton and James Trafford of Manchester City have been shortlisted by Tottenham. Having emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League since moving to Brighton from Anderlecht in 2023, Verbruggen is being closely monitored ahead of a possible move in the summer.
It remains to be seen whether Spurs decide to move on Vicario in the summer and replace him with a new No.1, but for now, he’s going nowhere and is expected to complete the 2025/26 season.
