Alasdair Gold updates on what Tottenham fans did when Vicario’s name was announced against Brentford

Alasdair Gold shared his two cents on the recently concluded Tottenham Hotspur vs. Brentford match.

Tottenham Hotspur finally won in that big building they are supposed to win in. After months of frustration and mounting tension, Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Brentford felt like the release everyone at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium desperately needed.

The £1 billion stadium has felt like a mausoleum of missed chances and miserable results for weeks. Tottenham won just once in their opening seven Premier League home matches this season, creating a toxic atmosphere where supporters paying some of the highest ticket prices in the country watched their team stumble through defeat after defeat.

Saturday felt different from the opening whistle. Xavi Simons set up Richarlison’s opener in the 25th minute before scoring himself just before halftime. The stadium erupted with genuine joy rather than the anxious relief that had characterized earlier celebrations. The South Stand finally lived up to its billing, creating the wall of sound it was designed to produce.

Football journalist Alasdair Gold captured the mood perfectly when reflecting on the match. He said (h/t Alasdair Gold on YouTube):

“Tottenham won in that big building they’re supposed to win in. Every single time they play there, they finally remembered how to be victorious.”

The atmosphere transformation in just seven days borders on remarkable. Gold noted how supporters left the stadium with genuine smiles:

“We all kind of left just having a fun day. Isn’t that the point of going to football? We haven’t really been able to experience that so much in the past year in N17.”

Last weekend’s defeat to Fulham saw Guglielmo Vicario jeered by his own supporters after a costly error. The disconnect between players and fans had reached critical levels. Speaking about the situation, Gold said:

“Seven days ago, the romance between the Spurs players and the fans was on the rocks, maybe even a divorce looked like it was in the offing.

Fast forward to Saturday and the atmosphere had completely shifted.

“As his name is read out, the majority of the 60,000 plus crowd gave Vicario a huge roar.”

Gold summed up:

“It’s crazy what a week can do. They just ticked the boxes that finally needed to be ticked and it shows you what a difference a week makes.”

Supporters Finally Enjoy Their Day at the Stadium

The romance between players and fans was on the rocks just seven days ago. Pedro Porro had criticized supporters after the Fulham defeat, while Thomas Frank called out those who jeered Vicario as not being true Tottenham fans. Players held internal discussions about the atmosphere and adopted a policy of leaving the pitch together without applauding fans, which some supporters perceived as a snub.

The Newcastle result on Tuesday provided the first signs of thaw. Cristian Romero’s dramatic late equalizer sparked celebrations that felt genuine. Saturday completed the transformation. Tottenham defended solidly, created chances, took them clinically, and most importantly gave supporters something to cheer about.

The victory moves Spurs up to the top half of the table, within touching distance of the top four. More importantly, it restored faith between players and fans after weeks of dysfunction. The challenge now is maintaining this atmosphere and building momentum through challenging fixtures ahead, including Champions League commitments and a trip to Liverpool.

Gold’s assessment captures the emotional whiplash of supporting Tottenham. Seven days ago, the club looked in crisis with their manager under intense pressure. Today, they have renewed hope that when things click, this club and these supporters can create something special together.
