Bayern confident about signing Tottenham target; if signed he can replace Bentancur at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur are exploring options in the midfield as well in the 2026 transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new midfielder in the upcoming 2026 transfer window. It has been a long time coming, given how the Lilywhites had been eyeing reinforcing their second phase for a while, but they haven’t been able to do so, and we are seeing that on the pitch as well this season.

And while there are many players linked with a move to Tottenham, a certain Kobbie Mainoo is among those names. He is someone that the Lilywhites should be falling over for.

But instead there have been reports that Bayern Munich have been quietly lining up everything. The German giants are said to be ‘confident’ in their pursuit of the England international (h/t TEAMtalk). And if Tottenham do let it happen, they might be passing on the perfect Bentancur successor.

Mainoo has slipped down the pecking order at United as Bayern look to pounce

The Manchester United midfielder has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford. And he has been linked with an M16 exit for a while now.

That is where Bayern’s optimism to get the deal over the line comes from. Though alongside Vincent Kompany’s flying giants, Tottenham and Manchester City are also in the race for his signature. However, right now it feels like the Lilywhites are watching from the edge of the dancefloor instead of actually stepping in.

And if that doesn’t change soon, Mainoo could turn into yet another “we were interested” story that the Lilywhites faithful have been saying about the better part of the past couple of decades for countless players.

Tottenham Hotspur remain keen on Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo despite competition from Real Madrid.
Kobbie Mainoo is one of England’s brightest young talents.

Let’s be honest, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been suffering in the midfield for a while now. He has put in some underwhelming performances of late and has barely looked himself since he signed that new contract at N17.

While Joao Palhinha is elite at destroying from the base of the midfield, he has his limitations on the ball. Then there is Pape Matar Sarr. He is good at covering the ground, but he kind of does a bit of everything.

And this is where you feel like Mainoo is more of a missing link. He is someone who can take the pressure out and bring a sense of composure and rhythm into that structure deployed by Thomas Frank. It will be a massive stride forward from the current chaos we see, especially when Tottenham try to build up from the back.

So ideally if the Lilywhites are looking for someone who can replace Bentancur for the long term and actually raise the ceiling of the midfield, then this is the sort of signing that Tottenham should be making. And Bayern see it, but the question is, do Spurs?
