Tottenham make shock decision over Yves Bissouma’s future after recent off-field controversy.
Yves Bissouma’s Tottenham Hotspur contract expires in the summer, and any chance of it being extended looks to have disappeared amid disciplinary problems under Thomas Frank.
The combative midfielder is currently rehabilitating from a knee injury, which he picked up while on international action for Mali back in October. He is yet to feature for Spurs this season, owing to a combination of disciplinary problems and injuries.
Earlier this week, Yves Bissouma landed in hot water after he was allegedly filmed ‘inhaling laughing gas’ in a recent clip. This isn’t the first time the 29-year-old has been in the spotlight for off-field reasons. He was caught inhaling laughing gas (nitrous oxide) in a video footage in August 2024. The Malian international was handed a one-game suspension by the club and he subsequently apologised for a “severe lack of judgement.”
However, Bissouma has clearly been unable to learn from his past wrongdoings, having been spotted doing it again in November, with investigations underway. And just when it looked like the midfielder’s N17 career was coming to an end, recent developments suggest otherwise.

Tottenham could give Bissouma a one-year extension
According to a report from The Sun, Tottenham could hand Bissouma a shock one-year contract extension if they fail to sell him during the January transfer window. But it would only be to ensure the club gains a fee from his summer exit rather than losing the midfielder on a free transfer.
The ex-Brighton and Hove Albion star came close to joining Turkish side Fenerbahce in the summer, only for a knee injury to ruin the deal. Interest from Turkey is expected to be revived when the transfer window reopens in January.
The club bosses have had enough of the player’s inconsistency and off-field issues and want to move him on. If they cannot, the north Londoners could trigger the 12-month option they hold on his contract to keep his value intact.

Bissouma dropped big hint over his Spurs future last week
The African enforcer has breached the disciplinary conduct at the club thrice over the last 18 months. Bissouma’s activity on social media last week when he deleted all association with Tottenham from his Instagram profile cast serious doubt over his future at White Hart Lane. And the latest laughing gas incident has only fuelled speculation of a possible departure.
Tottenham must do their best to end the Bissouma chapter. He does not feature in Frank’s plans and clearly looks determined to seal a switch away from the club. There is no point considering triggering a 12-month contract extension; instead, Spurs must do everything within their powers to offload the Malian to clear space on the wage bill.
Bissouma is not serious about his career, going by his off-field actions and approach, and a club of Tottenham’s stature and prestige cannot be home for such footballers.
