Pape Matar Sarr lifts lid on emotional exchange with Heung-min Son after Tottenham exit decision

Pape Matar Sarr was very emotional when Son Heung-min announced his decision to leave Tottenham in the summer.

Tottenham Hotspur released “Heung-Min Son: Homecoming,” a documentary capturing the final chapter of the South Korean star’s decade-long journey at the club, earlier this week. It documents the veteran forward’s long-awaited farewell at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during Spurs’ Champions League match against Slavia Praha on December 9.

After 10 long years of service, Son Heung-min left the north Londoners in the summer to join MLS club Los Angeles FC. He announced his departure during the club’s pre-season tour in South Korea; his final match in our famous shirt was at a jam-packed crowd in Seoul. The South Korean superstar returned to N17 for the first time since exiting Tottenham to bid a final goodbye to the passionate and loving fans.

The 33-year-old addressed the entire Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the kickoff vs. Slavia Praha in the Champions League last week.

Pape Matar Sarr was reduced to tears after learning Son Heung-min is leaving Spurs

Many associated with Tottenham were stunned when Son announced his departure from the club. The former skipper explained in the recently released documentary why he chose to leave the Lilywhites and move to the MLS.

In the film, which premiered on Wednesday, we can see a segment where Son is meeting different players after making his decision to end his time at the club public. Pape Matar Sarr became emotional after learning that Son will no longer be his teammate and skipper at Tottenham.

Son: “Pape, You not say hello?”

Sarr: “It’s because you’re leaving me.”

Son: “What’s wrong with your face? Don’t touch me.”

Sarr: “I’m gonna miss you!”

Son: “This is little Sonny!”

Son acted as a mentor for Sarr

Son is an inspiration to current Tottenham players. When Sarr officially arrived at White Hart Lane as a teenager from FC Metz in January 2023, Son took him under his wing. He helped the Senegalese international when he struggled with English, making him feel welcome at the club.

Back in July, Sarr praised Son as a “Mr. Nice” captain who helped him settle at Spurs by offering constant support. The way the midfielder said “I’m gonna miss you” demonstrated the duo’s bonding on and off the pitch. It also shed light on Son’s kindness, positive influence and mentorship during his time at Tottenham.
