Tottenham could net up to £5million from their pre-season plans in Australia

Tottenham are set to participate in the Sydney Super Cup as part of their 2026 pre-season tour of Australia.

Tottenham Hotspur announced earlier this month that they will be participating in the Sydney Super Cup as part of their 2026 pre-season tour. Four teams, Tottenham, Chelsea, Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC, will take part in that competition.

Spurs will play a first-ever match outside the UK against London rivals Chelsea on Saturday, August 1, at Accor Stadium- just a couple of weeks after the World Cup final in New York. Before facing Chelsea, the Lilywhites will take on A-League side Sydney FC at the Allianz Stadium on July 29.

Tottenham took their heated north London rivalry with Arsenal global earlier this summer during the pre-season tour of Asia. It was Thomas Frank’s first pre-season tour as Spurs head coach after replacing Ange Postecoglou, where legendary Son Heung-min announced he will be leaving Tottenham after 10 long years.

Tottenham plan to tap into the Australian market with short pre-season tour

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness thinks Tottenham would sell out a friendly against London rivals Chelsea. The Lilywhites could earn up to £5million from their pre-season plans in the land Down Under, as well as tap into the Australian market.

“Certainly, we all know Australia is a good market in terms of football over there still. A lot of Brits, so those will be sold out quickly. I think they’ve got Chelsea as well coming over. So, a London derby like that, Chelsea-Spurs played in Australia. That must be a first I think,” Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast.

“So, there’ll be a big crowd, sell-out crowd for that. It will be important for them to keep those sorts of markets going. I know certain Spurs fans, and there’s quite a big Spurs fan base in Australia. So yes, I think it is important for those clubs.

“Again, they’ll be looking for some sort of guarantees these days, around about between three and five million to make it worthwhile. They will be looking to get the international exposure, doing all they can with the fan base. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some sort of link into a stop in Asia on the way either there or back, or the Middle East. So, something may be along those lines.

“But I think Sydney FC, from what I understand, Chelsea and Spurs, I’m not sure if there’s a fourth club yet, but certainly it’ll be something that New South Wales tourism and the whole government have got behind it, and I think that is excellent for Spurs to go ahead and do it.”

Having a short pre-season tour in Australia should serve Tottenham well. It will allow the players to reach out to the Aussie supporters and give the north London club an opportunity to watch some talents from the A-League closely.

Given that both Tottenham and Chelsea will be involved in the Sydney Super Cup, the traction and mileage the tournament gets could be immense. However, due to the World Cup’s scheduling, Spurs could have several players missing the tour. On a positive note, it would allow the young talents and academy kids to shine in the competition, catching the head coach’s eye and preparing themselves for the 2026/27 campaign.
