Jimmy Thelin’s stance could see Tottenham recall Alfie Dorrington from Aberdeen loan – View

Tottenham academy talent Alfie Dorrington re-joined Aberdeen on loan in the summer.

Tottenham Hotspur moved on some players permanently and allowed many talents to leave on loan during the summer transfer window. Academy kid Alfie Dorrington was one of those to leave on loan.

Alfie Dorrington is one of the most highly rated young prospects at Spurs. The 20-year-old is tipped for a big future at White Hart Lane, and he caught the attention of during a loan stint in the Scottish Premiership last season with Aberdeen.

Spurs loaned the central defender back to Aberdeen in the summer after his strong spell during the second half of last season, with the Scottish side having European football to tackle. They opted to send Alfie Dorrington to the Dons despite receiving plenty of interest from English clubs, and it is fair to say Tottenham’s decision has not worked out well.

Dorrington was initially omitted from Aberdeen’s European squad, but he was handed a relief and featured in some trivial games. The youngster has made 14 appearances in all competitions ,but is not considered a starter under manager Jimmy Thelin when everyone is fit.

Now, Jimmy Thelin is prioritising adding a centre-back to his ranks, following Kristers Tobers’ season-ending injury and the unavailability of Gavin Mollay.

“Maybe they still have a journey to do but also in the academy, to create space and pathways for our players we have invested in,” Thelin was quoted by The Daily Record.

“In January, for sure there are going to be movements in and out. We will see when January is over what has happened. Let’s see how we balance the squad.”

Dorrington’s name hasn’t been directly mentioned by Thelin, but it sounds as if he is prioritising giving chances to Aberdeen’s own academy players over a player on loan. The injuries to Tobers and Mollay should open up the door for Dorrington to feature more, but if he doesn’t, Tottenham would do a wise job by cutting short his loan spell next month.

There is little point in the former England Under-19 international remaining in Scotland without getting regular opportunities to impress, when he could be going out elsewhere in the lower tiers of English football and testing himself. As Dorrington did not feature for the Lilywhites this season before joining the Dons on loan in the summer, the defender can still represent a second club in the second half of the season.
