Tottenham loanee’s potential Stoke exit opens Bolton door after just six appearances

Tottenham academy talent Jamie Donley has struggled to break into the Stoke City first XI under Mark Robins this season.

Tottenham Hotspur have always been a club focused on nurturing youngsters and academy talents. And as usual, they decided to send plenty of young guns out on loan during the summer transfer window.

Some of them are enjoying their time out on loan, especially Luka Vuskovic, who has become such a key figure for Bundesliga club SV Hamburger. Yang Min-hyeok is also thriving on loan at Championship club Portsmouth. The South Korean talent scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to beat Charlton Athletic and lift Portsmouth out of the Championship relegation zone.

However, there are players who have endured a tough loan spell. One of those is Jamie Donley. The creative midfielder has experienced a disappointing loan stint at Stoke City during the first half of the campaign. He has managed only four appearances in the Championship, clocking 77 minutes in total. Surprisingly, the Tottenham academy talent has not even started one league game at Stoke City thus far.

Bolton Wanderers want Jamie Donley on loan for the second half of the season

Now, according to The Sun reporter Alan Nixon, via his exclusive Patreon service, Tottenham are expected to recall Jamie Donley from his loan spell at Stoke City at some point in the next couple of days. Bolton Wanderers have registered their interest in the 20-year-old in a bid to sign him for the second half of the season.

Bolton Wanderers are eyeing a return to the Championship but their promotion hopes have been dented in recent weeks. They have lost two of their last three games, including Monday night’s defeat to Mansfield Town. Even though Steven Schumacher’s side are sixth in the table, they are now separated from second-placed Lincoln City by seven points.

As a result, the League One side are eyeing reinforcements to bolster their promotion hopes and want to sign Donley on a temporary deal from Tottenham. Alan Nixon adds Spurs will be happy to see the Northern Ireland international go back to League One, where he actually thrived last season.

Donley made his name on loan at Leyton Orient, scoring eight goals and providing 11 assists in 52 total appearances, including a wonder strike from the half-line against Manchester City in the FA Cup last season. This led to the Antrim-born talent’s rise in stock in the summer, and after a scramble for his signature, Stoke City eventually won the race.

At Stoke, Donley has not been favoured from the start of his loan spell by manager Mark Robins, so it would be too harsh to judge him based on just six appearances. The January window offers him an opportunity to write a new script elsewhere, and a move to Bolton could help the attacking midfielder regain his mojo.
