Fabrizio Romano reveals why Brennan Johnson will not be in the Tottenham squad tonight

Tottenham Hotspur will visit the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford in their New Year’s Day fixture.

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update revealing why Brennan Johnson will not be featuring in Tottenham Hotspur’s squad tonight when they face Brentford at Gtech Community Stadium.

The Welshman – Tottenham’s Europa League hero and last season’s top-scorer has been heavily linked to Crystal Palace in recent days. Earlier, it was also reported that Spurs and Palace had agreed on a £35m fee, with only the decision from Johnson pending. Fast-forward a couple of days, and it looks like the transfer might be sealed soon.

The report from Romano now states that the deal is in its final stages and ‘Here We Go’ is impending. Romano also added that it would be medical next for Johnson and that he wouldn’t be in the squad to face Brentford. Here is what he wrote on X:

Brennan Johnson and Crystal Palace, deal at final stages as Tottenham give permission to the player to discuss personal terms with #CPFC. Medical could follow next as Brennan Johnson will NOT be in Spurs squad to face Brentford. Palace are on it. Here we go, soon.

Brennan Johnson was starved of starts this year under Thomas Frank

Brennan Johnson has struggled for a place in the starting XI ever since Danish manager Thomas Frank arrived at Hotspur Way

Brennan Johnson hardly got starts under new manager Thomas Frank. The Welshman, who was a regular part of former manager Ange Postecoglou’s set-up, found himself struggling for a place in the starting XI ever since the Dane’s arrival. It is worth noting that he has made just six appearances in the EPL for Spurs.

A move to Crystal Palace would certainly see the 24-year-old get starts under Oliver Glasner, whose team have been struggling of late because of their attack misfiring. Despite boasting the likes of Mateta, Uche and Nketiah, the South London team’s goals have dried up, with Palace having dropped points in most of their games since November.

Since the fee is expected to be somewhere around £35m, it will also mark Tottenham’s 4th highest sale ever in their history, giving them a decent financial boost.
