Tottenham attacker Mohammed Kudus is set to miss several games after suffering a thigh injury in the 1-1 draw vs. Sunderland at home.
Things have not gone as per the plan for Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur since mid-October. A decent start to the campaign has faded, with two wins in the last 11 Premier League outings leaving the Lilywhites in 13th spot.
Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday led to boos from the home crowd at full-time whistle. Some sections of the fanbase have been unhappy with the club accepting a bid for Brennan Johnson from Crystal Palace. Brennan Johnson was the club’s top scorer last season with 18 goals, but had become a peripheral figure under Thomas Frank, starting just four league games this campaign.
As he was deemed surplus to requirements by the gaffer, the board decided to sell the Wales international to Crystal Palace. And just a couple of days later, Spurs have now been hit with an injury blow in a position where they are already light.
Tottenham weighing up a replacement for injured Mohammed Kudus
According to a report from The Daily Telegraph, Tottenham are considering signing a forward this month after scans showed Mohammed Kudus’ injury is worse than initially feared.
Mohammed Kudus was withdrawn after 19 minutes in Spurs’ 1-1 stalemate with Sunderland after going down off the ball, clutching his left thigh. He received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Randal Kolo Muani and heading straight down the tunnel.
Thomas Frank said in his press conference that the Ghanaian international will miss the Bournemouth game on Wednesday evening at least. While there were hopes of a quick return, the results of the scans will now see the creative winger miss further games heading into the crucial second half of the campaign.
It is not yet known how many games Kudus will miss, but it appears enough to force Tottenham to enter the transfer market for a replacement. Kudus’ thigh injury absence leaves the Lilywhites seriously depleted in the right-wing position. It will prove a problematic area now after Johnson moved to Palace last week, and for the time being, Frank has to rely on Wilson Odobert, Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel to do a job from the right.
Spurs send scouts to watch AS Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche
One of the targets Tottenham missed out on last summer was AS Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche. Frank wanted another creative option in his squad to compensate for the injury absences of Maddison and Kulusevski, but the club decided against splashing £47.5 million for Akliouche. Eventually, despite intense speculation surrounding his future, the winger ended up staying at AS Monaco.
Having stayed at AS Monaco, the 23-year-old has grown in stature and put in a series of fantastic displays- both in Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Regarded as one of the hottest talents in French football, Akliouche has been no short of interest from European clubs. Tottenham have continued monitoring his progress and recently sent scouts to watch the Frenchman in action against Lyon.
With Kudus injured and Johnson sold, Spurs must not hesitate to splash the cash this time around and bring Akliouche to White Hart Lane in this transfer window. Quick, agile, creative and unpredictable, the Monaco talent could provide an immediate solution to Tottenham’s right-wing conundrum and replace Kudus in Frank’s first XI.
