Tottenham urged to buy new midfielder who could provide one aspect that is missing in the middle of the park

The lack of creativity in the middle of the park is causing Tottenham some massive problems this season.

Tottenham must act swiftly in the ongoing transfer window if they are to salvage their season and make something of it. For some time now, the Lilywhites have been crying out for an elite ball-carrier who can slot into the heart of midfield and provide creativity from central areas. At present, the North Londoners lack a midfielder capable of influencing the game at both ends of the pitch in that manner.

The recent defeat to Bournemouth underlined the need for a player who can withstand pressure in midfield and carry the ball into the opposition half with ease. Thomas Frank opted for a double pivot of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur, a decision that clearly pointed towards a more defensive approach at the Vitality Stadium.

Starting both players together leaves Spurs short of creativity in midfield, forcing them to rely heavily on quick transitions instead. Palhinha is renowned for his defensive awareness and willingness to do the dirty work for the Lilywhites. Bentancur, on the other hand, lacks the technical quality required to consistently influence proceedings in the final third.

Tottenham need to bring in midfield reinforcements in the winter

It comes as little surprise that Tottenham are targeting a new midfielder in the current transfer window. The Lilywhites are aiming to secure European qualification this season, and to achieve that, they will need to recruit a top-quality player capable of making an immediate impact in the second half of the campaign. There is a pressing need to inject creativity into the side ahead of the upcoming fixtures.

Lyall Thomas has now urged Spurs to sign a midfielder who can bring much-needed creativity to the team during the latter stages of the season. Taking to X, Thomas said,

“Tottenham’s biggest problem is in midfield for me. They find it such a challenge to progress the ball. Passing is so sloppy at times, regularly giving ball away. They’ve just not recruited well there for a long time in my opinion. Plenty of 6s who can break up and turnover but they’re seriously lacking in creativity.”

Thomas believes Tottenham’s main issue lies in their lack of midfield options. The Lilywhites have struggled to move the ball effectively through the middle of the pitch this season and have been reluctant to take risks from central areas. The clash with Bournemouth further highlighted how frequently possession was squandered through sloppy passing over long spells. As a result, Fretton has urged the club to add creativity in the winter window by signing a player willing to take risks.

Spurs currently rank 20th in the Premier League for attempted through balls, having registered just nine so far. This statistic clearly illustrates that the North Londoners are missing a risk-taker who can unlock opposition defences. Therefore, the Lilywhites’ top priority should be to sign an elite ball-carrier capable of progressing the ball and linking up effectively with the attackers in the final third.

Recent reports have linked Spurs with Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo. The England international would be an ideal fit at N17, given his ability to operate in tight spaces and his willingness to drive forward when given the chance. However, securing his signature would not be straightforward, as he would reportedly only consider a short-term loan move. It remains to be seen whether the North Londoners will push for Mainoo or target a player with a similar profile instead.
