Tottenham Hotspur have a clear internal plan to complete €25m signing

Joao Palhinha is playing a crucial role for Tottenham at both ends of the pitch

Tottenham midfielder Joao Palhinha is enjoying a productive season with the Lilywhites after joining the club on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich last summer. The Portuguese international has anchored the midfield effectively for the North Londoners, adding an extra layer of protection in front of the defence. He has also made a surprising impact in the final third, regularly finding himself in promising goal-scoring positions.

Few expected Palhinha to pose a consistent goal threat when Spurs brought him to N17. However, the 30-year-old has added a new dimension to his game, one that has proved valuable for Thomas Frank’s side this season. His most recent goal contribution came in the defeat against Bournemouth, where he scored a spectacular overhead kick to draw the Lilywhites level.

After losing his place in the starting eleven for a brief period in recent weeks, the Portuguese international has once again re-established himself in the side. He is one of only two players in the Premier League to have won more than 40 tackles and regained possession over 40 times this season. That is an impressive achievement and underlines Palhinha’s growing influence within the team.

Joao Palhinha’s Tottenham future remains uncertain for the time being

Tottenham fans have largely been impressed by Joao Palhinha’s form this season. The midfielder has done well to shield the back line and reassert control in the middle of the park for the Lilywhites. The main limitation in his game remains his lack of creativity from deep areas. He often looks uncomfortable in possession, which forces the North Londoners to rely on alternative routes to progress the ball.

At one stage, Palhinha was among the first names on the team sheet under Thomas Frank. He formed a solid midfield partnership with Rodrigo Bentancur at the start of the campaign, playing a key role in disrupting opposition play. His consistent performances even led Spurs to consider keeping him beyond this season by triggering the option to sign him permanently for around €30m.

However, the 30-year-old has slipped out of the starting eleven in recent weeks prior to his standout moment against Bournemouth. His struggles to retain possession and dictate play from deep have raised concerns at N17, with the club unconvinced that he represents the ideal long-term solution in midfield. Given Frank’s preference for a high-tempo style, Palhinha has increasingly been used as an impact substitute.

Adding further uncertainty, Florian Plettenberg (via X) has reported that Spurs will decide on Palhinha’s future at the end of the season. The Lilywhites are in no rush to make the move permanent, having a rather clear internal plan, and will continue to assess his performances during the second half of the campaign. This also leaves the door open for the midfielder to explore other options should Tottenham opt against retaining him.

Recent reports have linked the Portuguese international with a return to Fulham. Marco Silva is a long-time admirer of Palhinha and is keen to bring him back to Craven Cottage as the Cottagers continue their push up the Premier League table. The midfielder may soon face an important decision regarding his future, with Fulham expected to make their move in the coming weeks.
