Tottenham recently let go of their 2024-25 season star Brennan Johnson.
Tottenham Hotspur have adopted a transfer policy to land highly acclaimed talents and develop them through the corridors at Hotspur Way. This has seen the North Londoners being linked with multiple sensations from across Europe. But all of those transfer prospects aren’t an easy deal to conclude, given the presence of other top-tier clubs.
And that is exactly what has happened yet again, as Manchester United have reportedly taken the first concrete steps in the race to bring in highly rated RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande (h/t Caught Offside). This has seen them edge ahead of Tottenham Hotspur as well as Liverpool in the process for the 19-year-old’s signature.
Manchester United leapfrog Tottenham in race for Yan Diomande
The Manchester Reds have been expected to dip into the market to bring in a versatile wide attacker to Old Trafford this year. Their original blueprint for the ongoing winter transfer window was disrupted because of the absence of Amad Diallo as well as Bryan Mbeumo, both of whom are away on their Africa Cup of Nations commitments.
And in Diomande, they bring in a sense of rapidness and directness along with a sense of end product, which makes him an appealing option at M16.
The aforementioned report claims that they have formally initiated discussions with his current employers over a potential deal.
Making sense of Tottenham’s interest in Yan Diomande
As for the Lilywhites, Thomas Frank & Co. have been looking at Diomande with more of a long-term plan for him. Given that Son Heung-min has now left the North Londoners for a few months now, Tottenham are still in the market to bring in a natural successor to the South Korean on the left flank.
Alongside Son’s void, the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace in the ongoing January window means that the Dane head coach is left with fewer options out wide. And that is where their interest in signing the 19-year-old, who has netted seven goals alongside his four assists in 16 outings in all competitions so far this season, comes into the picture.
But for now, it looks like Man United have taken charge of the proceedings and shifted the balance of this deal. But all is not lost yet for the Lilywhites, as there is still time for them to announce themselves on the table to his signatures.
