Six-goal Tottenham star open to January exit as frustration grows at N17

The player in question has been quite impressive in his recent starts for the club.

Tottenham Hotspur have been having an underwhelming 2025/26 campaign, and to add to their on-pitch woes, the Lilywhites could soon face another uncomfortable decision in the ongoing January transfer window, with Mathys Tel reportedly not being happy over the lack of playing time under his belt, with the Frenchman open to listening to offers.

According to a report from reliable RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins, the reportedly frustrated 20-year-old forward wants more minutes. And at the moment, the former Bayern Munich star does not rule out a move away from north London, only months after his initial loan transfer was made permanent.

Tel going the Bayern way with Tottenham as well?

Mathys Tel was a rare shining light in Tottenham’s defeat vs Bournemouth, but he wants out…

Tel joined Tottenham with a huge reputation, as his time at Bayern Munich led to a similar situation where he was not given enough game time for his talent to be recognised. There were expectations that some confidence and game time at Hotspur Way would see him become more of himself. But that promise has not translated into momentum at Tottenham as well.

Since he signed for Tottenham, Tel has only scored six goals in 38 appearances across all competitions. While the raw numbers don’t tell the full story, his minutes on the pitch have been inconsistent. And under Frank, the French forward has gradually slipped down the pecking order.

We have seen the Dane head coach barely use Tel, even when Tottenham were short of players or craved that cutting edge in the final third.

Do you think Tottenham will sell Tel?

With Tel, the major concern will now be that Tottenham ends up being another stalled chapter (just like Bayern Munich) rather than the place where he kicks on his career. And at his age, he would feel that being on the pitch and having opportunities to grow into his potential would be ideal (which is where his stand on a possible exit makes sense).

But for Tottenham, it will look like an awkward deal if his exit goes through. Levy brought in Tel as more of a long-term investment than a short-term punt. Now, letting him leave this quickly will not only feel more like an admission that the plan hasn’t worked, but also be a massive loss of confidence for young players who are looking at Tottenham as a possible destination.

That being said, no clubs have yet been publicly linked with Tel in the ongoing window just yet. So we will see what happens…
