Rodrigo Bentancur suffered an injury during Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat against Bournemouth.
Tottenham Hotspur are staring at another season where injuries define their campaign. And that has taken another worrying turn with veteran midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur becoming the latest face to join the treatment table.
While the Lilywhites are still waiting for clarity on the seriousness of his injury, concern is already spreading far beyond North London.

According to Uruguayan outlet Tenfield, the muscular injury that he suffered has triggered alarm within the national setup. The 28-year-old picked it up late in the North Londoners’ recent 3–2 defeat away to Bournemouth.
And while Tottenham are yet to release a medical report on Bentancur, the repercussions of this injury have boiled over and are already being discussed in Uruguay.
The report states that Bentancur is undergoing medical tests, which will help Tottenham get a gist of the extent of the injury. While the Lilywhites are still waiting for the final results, Spurs’ under-fire boss Thomas Frank admitted that the early signs are not encouraging.
In his post-match reflections, Frank revealed that the issue with Bentancur “seems more serious, unfortunately.” And these are the exact words which ruffled a few feathers across the Atlantic.
Uruguay get in touch with Tottenham for Bentancur

Thinking about this from Uruguay’s point of view, the timing of this injury could hardly be worse. Bentancur is a key figure in the middle of the park for Marcelo Bielsa & Co. When fit, he is a guaranteed starter for them. And now with only five months remaining until the 2026 World Cup, any injury setback will no longer be viewed as routine by them but more as a disruption to the long-term planning.
The reports further state that Rodrigo’s national side are understood to be in direct contact with Tottenham and are currently “waiting to receive the medical report.”
Uruguay only have one more opportunity to access the squad, which comes in the match when they are scheduled to face England here at Wembley on March 27.

Given that we are so close to the World Cup, there is going to be an immediate urgency among international sides for their players. But for Tottenham, this injury also has a far-reaching impact, given how the Uruguayan has been controlling the build-up phase at times, especially against sides that go into a mid-block when facing Thomas Frank’s side.
How big a loss will Bentancur be for Uruguay if this turns out to be a big injury? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
