Steve Sidwell hints at worrying issue spreading through Tottenham under Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank might have to face the axe for Tottenham’s poor form this season.

A lot went wrong for Thomas Frank’s Tottenham when they travelled to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth in the Premier League earlier this week. The Danish tactician was seen holding an “Arsenal cup” before kick-off, a moment that sparked widespread controversy among the fanbase and the media. Matters worsened for the Lilywhites as they went on to suffer yet another defeat against the Cherries, courtesy of a last-minute winner from Antoine Semenyo.

To compound the frustration, Micky van de Ven squared up to the travelling Spurs supporters after the final whistle, underlining the growing disconnect between the fans and the squad. Cristian Romero also did not hold back in his social media post after the match, openly criticising the club’s hierarchy for a lack of accountability amid Tottenham’s dismal Premier League form.

For Frank, however, steadying the ship at N17 now appears to be a mammoth task. The Danish manager looks increasingly out of his depth under the intense scrutiny from both fans and the media. His side currently sit 14th in the table, having managed just one win in their last league outings. This underlines the lack of progress made under the former Brentford boss in his short spell at the club.

Thomas Frank is not the only problem at Tottenham

Much of the blame for Tottenham’s poor league form has been directed at Thomas Frank this season, and not without reason. However, it is also important to acknowledge that his squad has been hit by an injury crisis, with several key players sidelined for large parts of the campaign. On top of that, the club’s hierarchy have failed to fully back the manager in the transfer market, despite the clear need for reinforcements.

Steve Sidwell remains supportive of Frank and hopes to see him succeed at N17 despite the widening gap between the fans and the club. Speaking on talkSPORT, while highlighting the worrying issue spreading through Tottenham under Frank, Sidwell said,

“There’s a lot of stuff that’s happened since Frank came in and I think the majority of the footballing people want him to do well because he’s a very likeable guy and he’s deserved his shot at a big club. It’s broken from the hierarchy to the players, and from the squad to the manager. I think there’s a disconnect with the fans as well.”

Spurs have undergone several structural changes behind the scenes since Thomas Frank’s appointment in the summer. That instability has played a major role in the Lilywhites’ struggles on the pitch, as constant changes within the hierarchy have created uncertainty at N17. As Sidwell rightly highlights, the disconnect between the fans and the players continues to grow. The players also appear frustrated with the club’s leadership for making empty promises and failing to support the team during difficult periods.

It increasingly feels as though Thomas Frank has become the fall guy for wider issues at the club. There is a strong sense among the Spurs faithful that this could mark the beginning of the end for the Danish tactician at N17. Results have been poor in recent weeks, and a managerial change is now being viewed as a potential solution to the problems surrounding Hotspur Way. Whether that would truly change the club’s fortunes remains to be seen.
