Thomas Frank addresses flashpoint involving Watkins after heated Villa ending

Thomas Frank believes Ollie Watkins provoked Joao Palhinha.

Thomas Frank has accused Ollie Watkins of provoking João Palhinha during the mass brawl that erupted at the full-time whistle following Tottenham’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Ugly scenes unfolded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Watkins celebrated Villa’s victory by walking toward the away supporters, appearing to deliberately move into the path of Palhinha. The Tottenham midfielder reacted by shoving the England striker, sparking a melee that involved players from both teams, coaching staff, and stewards.

Palhinha squared up to Watkins before Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa became involved, with Micky van de Ven attempting to separate the players. Both benches streamed across the pitch as tensions threatened to boil over, creating chaotic scenes that overshadowed Villa’s progression to the fourth round.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Frank defended his midfielder while criticizing Watkins for his celebrations. He said (h/t football.london):

“I think Ollie is a bit provoking, he’s celebrating in front of the Villa fans but walks into Joao and can easily walk around him. Anybody in the game just after a defeat knows what that will do.”

The incident represents the latest in a series of disciplinary concerns for Tottenham this season. Palhinha and Van de Ven were involved in angry exchanges with their own supporters following Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth, while Cristian Romero received an additional one-match suspension from the FA on Friday for failing to leave the field promptly after his red card against Liverpool last month.

The match had already turned ill-tempered earlier when Palhinha caught Boubacar Kamara with a challenge that forced the Villa midfielder off after just nine minutes. Villa manager Unai Emery hinted at frustration with the incident, though he praised referee Craig Pawson’s overall performance.

The defeat leaves Tottenham out of both domestic cup competitions and languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. Frank faces a must-win fixture against West Ham United next Saturday as pressure continues to mount on the Danish manager.

Villa’s travelling supporters taunted Frank throughout the match, mocking him with chants about being an Arsenal fan after he was spotted earlier in the week drinking from a coffee cup bearing the Gunners’ logo. The unfortunate gaffe added to Frank’s misery during a torrid period that threatens his position at the club.
