Tottenham told the three-match ban has helped attacker settle down at the club after impressive performance

The attacker showed glimpses of his quality for Tottenham against Aston Villa in the FA Cup

Tottenham were knocked out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa after suffering a home defeat on Saturday night. The Lilywhites showed admirable fight after falling 2-0 behind in the first half, but it was not to be in the end as Unai Emery’s side held on to their advantage and emerged as deserved winners. The result has further increased the pressure on Thomas Frank, with his position at N17 now under greater scrutiny.

Supporters were understandably frustrated by the outcome, yet there were several encouraging performances across the pitch for the North Londoners. Among the standout displays, Xavi Simons was arguably the biggest difference-maker. The Dutchman grew into the contest and showcased his quality almost at will during the second half. He covered every blade of grass and was constantly demanding the ball from his teammates.

According to Sofascore, the 22-year-old finished the match with a rating of 7.1. He completed 89% of his progressive passes, underlining his importance in linking the midfield with the attack. Simons also won four ground duels and two aerial duels, while registering 57 touches, highlighting his influence in both regaining and retaining possession after the break.

Xavi Simons is finding his feet at Tottenham

It is fair to say that Xavi Simons has faced significant criticism from sections of the Tottenham fanbase following a slow start to life at N17. Jamie O’Hara even compared the Dutchman to Manchester United flop Antony, claiming the 22-year-old offered little to the team and was occupying a place in Thomas Frank’s starting eleven.

However, credit must be given to Simons for keeping his head down and adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League. John Wenham was also full of praise for the youngster’s display against Aston Villa, suggesting that his three-game suspension may have come at the right time. Taking to X, Wenham said,

“Very impressed with Xavi’s performance tonight. Huge physical improvement from him to go with the technical ability he arrived with. Maybe, the 3-game ban has allowed Xavi to settle into life at Hotspur Way with consistent training and into his new surroundings in London.”

As Wenham pointed out, there were clear signs of physical improvement in Simons’ performance against Aston Villa. The Lilywhite Rose owner suggested that the red-card suspension may have worked in the Dutchman’s favour, allowing him time to reassess his performances and sharpen his game on the training ground. It may also have helped the 22-year-old settle into his new surroundings following his move from RB Leipzig.

The most noticeable change in his performance was how effectively Simons used his body to shield the ball while dribbling past opponents. He utilised his physical strength to good effect, driving forward with purpose and playing a more direct game. There was a clear positivity to his approach, and he showed no hesitation in taking on his marker whenever the opportunity arose.

The responsibility now lies with Simons to build on this promising display as he looks to establish himself as a regular under Thomas Frank. Spurs are aiming to salvage their season, and having the 22-year-old in top form could be crucial in determining how the campaign concludes. With Mohammed Kudus sidelined until March, all eyes will be on Simons to step up as the creative force and lead the attacking line during the second half of the season.
