Winners and Losers from Tottenham’s disappointing 2-1 FA Cup defeat against Aston Villa

Tottenham exit the FA Cup after 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Tottenham crashed out of the FA Cup as Aston Villa dominated at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham suffered another humiliating defeat on Saturday evening. As the match unfolded, Spurs started poorly and never recovered against a superior Aston Villa side that controlled proceedings comfortably throughout.

Emiliano Buendía gave Villa an early lead in the 22nd minute with a well-taken finish, before Morgan Rogers doubled their advantage on the stroke of halftime. Wilson Odobert’s 54th-minute strike briefly offered hope, but Thomas Frank’s side couldn’t find an equalizer as Villa defended their lead expertly. The result meant Spurs crash out of the FA Cup at the third-round round, sitting 14th in the Premier League with their season in complete disarray.

Despite Odobert’s goal sparking brief optimism, Tottenham’s defensive frailties and attacking impotence were brutally exposed by Villa’s quality. Unai Emery’s side defended intelligently when protecting their lead and carried a genuine threat throughout, with their superiority ultimately punishing Spurs’ inability to compete at the required level.

In the end, Tottenham left with nothing after delivering another woeful home performance, with Frank’s position now looking untenable after elimination from both domestic cup competitions.

Winners from the game:

Wilson Odobert: Scored Tottenham’s only goal with a clinical 54th-minute finish, blasting low into the bottom corner after excellent work from Randal Kolo Muani. Odobert showed pace and directness that troubled Villa’s defense, creating Spurs’ best moments in an otherwise dismal performance, though he was isolated for long periods as Villa controlled the match comfortably and his efforts ultimately counted for nothing.

Xavi Simons: Showed glimpses of quality in the attacking third, creating several half-chances with intelligent movement between the lines and testing Marco Bizot from range in the second half. Simons provided Tottenham’s most creative threat and tried to drive his team forward when others struggled, though his final ball lacked precision and he couldn’t inspire the comeback Spurs desperately needed. He even scored in the second-half, but his goal was eventually ruled out for offside.

Losers from the game:

Cristian Romero: Suspended after his disastrous performance at Bournemouth, the Argentine captain watched from the stands as his teammates crashed out of the FA Cup without his leadership. Romero’s absence highlighted how crucial he is to Tottenham’s defensive organization, with Kevin Danso struggling badly on his debut to fill the void.

Mathys Tel: Struggled to make any meaningful impact throughout the match, failing to build on his promising Bournemouth performance with an ineffective display. Tel was isolated for long periods, his decision-making in the final third was poor, and he couldn’t provide the energy or creativity that Tottenham desperately needed to mount a comeback, highlighting his inconsistency despite flashes of quality in recent weeks.
