Thomas Frank did this one thing to convince Conor Gallagher to ditch Aston Villa in favour of Tottenham

Tottenham have agreed a €40m deal with Atletico Madrid for Conor Gallagher.

Thomas Frank is in dire need of quick improvements to his Tottenham Hotspur squad during the January transfer window. The sack pressure is building on Thomas Frank following his side’s alarming dip in form since mid-October.

Spurs have already agreed a deal with Santos for teenage left-back Souza. The Brazilian defender is expected to complete his medical this week. And the club has no intention to stop; the north Londoners have moved quickly in the market after learning of Rodrigo Bentancur’s potentially season-ending hamstring injury.

The Lilywhites are also set to complete the signing of Conor Gallagher, having agreed a €40m permanent deal with Atletico Madrid. The central midfielder is set to fly to England on Tuesday to complete his medical and finalise details on a long-term contract.

Thomas Frank has played a key role in convincing Conor Gallagher to choose Tottenham over Aston Villa

Conor Gallagher failed to convince Diego Simeone that he was worthy of a regular berth with Atletico Madrid. As a result, the England international has managed only four starts in La Liga and nine overall this season. He is now expected to return to the Premier League after 18 months at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital.

The ex-Chelsea star was initially expected to sign for Aston Villa, who had been in negotiations with Atletico Madrid, and while a deal had been agreed and had been given a hesitant yes from the midfielder himself, it was Tottenham who ultimately beat them to the deal. And the man pulling the strings behind the scenes is understood to be Thomas Frank.

Now, according to the reliable Matt Law of the Telegraph, Thomas Frank made a personal call to Gallagher to convince him to join Spurs and not wait for a move to Aston Villa. The Danish tactician helped clinch the deal for the north London club by having a conversation with the England international personally and convincing him the move was right, despite his team’s struggles this season.

Gallagher has seemingly been swayed by Frank’s pitch over the long-term vision and plans of the club, which will be reflected by the five-and-a-half-year contract length. The fact that Frank played such a big role in helping Tottenham beat Villa to the Gallagher deal demonstrates that he still retains the faith and support of the Lewis Family owners and CEO Vinai Venkatesham.

Should the central midfielder pass his medical successfully and subsequently sign on the dotted lines, he will become the biggest signing at White Hart Lane post the Daniel Levy era.
