Worse than Juande Ramos: Thomas Frank is statistically Tottenham’s worst manager of the last two decades

Shocking stat reveals Thomas Frank as worst Tottenham boss in 20 years.

Tottenham Hotspur’s season sank to a new low on Saturday as they were dumped out of the FA Cup following a morale-killing 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. That has only intensified the pressure on Thomas Frank and further made clear just how damaging his short reign in North London has been.

This means Spurs have now won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions. WOW. What was once framed as a transitional season has begun to resemble a collapse. With the FA Cup gone and league form sliding, Tottenham see themselves rapidly running out of ways to salvage anything positive from this campaign.

Frank was appointed less than 200 days ago, replacing Ange Postecoglou, but the numbers paint a bleak picture of regression. In 31 matches in charge, the Dane has won 12, drawn eight and lost 12, leaving him with a points per game average of just 1.32.

Even below Juande Ramos: One Direction, and that is down

Postecoglou, despite his own inconsistencies, averaged 1.52 points per game, meaning Frank’s return represents a 13% drop in performance. Worse still, when stacked up against Tottenham’s managerial history, Frank’s record places him at the bottom of the pile across the last two decades. His average officially undercuts the 1.35 points per game recorded by Juande Ramos during his spell between 2007 and 2008. STATISTICALLY, THOMAS FRANK IS THE WORST TOTTENHAM MANAGER IN NEARLY TWO DECADES [h/t Transfermarkt].

The contrast with previous eras is also, well, contrasting. Under Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs averaged 1.84 points per game and regularly competed at the top end of the table. Even the more pragmatic approaches under Jose Mourinho at 1.77 and Antonio Conte at 1.78 delivered far greater consistency. Frank has even fallen behind Nuno Santo, who averaged 1.65 points per game before his dismissal in 2021.

Losing under Frank and losing under Postecoglou is very different. Under the Australian, the Lilywhites had a clear identity. Play offensive football, come what may, and MAYBE get the three points. Under Frank, there seems to be no clear strategy or game plan as to how to go about things. There’s no set style of play. It is just lateral passes and leaving it to the almighty, which has honestly gotten us only as far as 14th on the table. We have to do better than this.

Hand in head for Thomas Frank

Frank may believe he can turn this around, but numbers of this weight are rarely survived. The clock never stops. The club has to do what it has to at the earliest. Tick tock…
