Simon Jordan claims Conor Gallagher only ‘marginally’ improves Tottenham, but Aston Villa was a better fit

Simon Jordan feels Aston Villa suited Conor Gallagher better than Tottenham.

Simon Jordan has delivered a blunt assessment of Tottenham Hotspur’s incoming move for Conor Gallagher, arguing the midfielder would have done better by joining Aston Villa, even as Spurs close in on completing the deal, pending the medical.

Gallagher, 25, stands expected to finalise a switch to Tottenham after Atletico Madrid accepted a fee in the region of €40m. Villa had explored a route to bring him back to the Premier League on an initial loan, with the intention of making it permanent in the summer, but Spurs have acted with far greater urgency in the market.

That urgency is not hard to understand. Tottenham’s midfield has been shredded by injuries and absences at the worst possible time, with Rodrigo Bentancur undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury that will keep him out for months. For Thomas Frank, who is already under immense pressure, Gallagher comes across as a stabiliser: a player with durability, intensity, and Premier League familiarity.

Simon Jordan not convinced about Conor Gallagher’s transfer to Tottenham

Simon Jordan, though, is not convinced this is anything more than a functional fix. Here is what he told Birmingham Live, highlighting that Gallagher would only marginally improve Tottenham.

“I think he’s OK; he did fantastic at Palace. Do I think he’s a world-beater? No. Do I think he makes Spurs better? Marginally. Will this catapult Spurs to the levels they require? No. Would it have been a better move if he went to Villa? Probably.”

Cuts to the heart of Tottenham’s current problem does this quote. Spurs have not simply needed depth. They have needed difference makers. Gallagher’s strengths are obvious: high work rate, relentless pressing, ball winning, and the kind of box-to-box running that lifts a midfield’s baseline. But he is not a pure creator, nor a controller who dictates tempo, and that is why some will see him as more of a patch than a transformative answer.

The Villa angle is interesting because Unai Emery’s side is currently the more stable project. In a settled system with clear structure, Gallagher’s energy could have become a genuine force multiplier.

At Spurs, he walks into a far more chaotic environment, where the expectation is immediate impact in the middle of a storm. Maybe the Lilywhites need more creative forces in the middle of the park, but who knows how it might turn out for the club going forward.

That said, Tottenham surely do not have the luxury of waiting for the perfect fit. Injury issues have forced their hand, and Gallagher offers a dependable Premier League-level solution. Jordan may be right that it will not “catapult” Spurs forward, but right now, Spurs need traction before they can even think about takeoff.
