Tottenham begin formal managerial talks with Xabi Alonso as pressure grows on Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank has come under serious pressure at Tottenham of late.

Tottenham Hotspur are enduring quite a difficult season under Thomas Frank. The Dane’s first campaign in charge at N17 hasn’t gone quite as planned, as the Lilywhites falter down in fourteenth (14) in the Premier League, whilst having crashed out of both the domestic competitions already.

And while there is this huge pressure bearing down on Thomas Frank, the club do continue to stand behind him for now. Though that is very much like our opinion on why they should not take the Manchester United and Chelsea way and stick with the former Brentford man at the helm, it doesn’t mean that the clubs are not preparing for otherwise.

The officials within the corridors at Hotspur Way are preparing for contingencies if Frank were to be shown the door.

And the North Londoners have reportedly taken a big step in their search for a new face to take over the keys at N17. The fresh claims suggest that the club have begun formal negotiations with a potential Frank replacement.

According to a report from Fichajes, Tottenham have opened talks with Xabi Alonso over a possible move to England after he was recently relieved of his duties in charge of Real Madrid. And there is growing confidence in north London that a deal could be made with the former Liverpool player.

While his time at Real Madrid was not as shiny as many thought it would turn out to be, the 44-year-old is one of the most highly rated young coaches in European football. Let’s not forget his work at Bayer Leverkusen, which has earned him huge admiration across the continent. His Leverkusen were a well-drilled side, and they played some of the most attractive football we have seen in the Bundesliga in the recent past.

And that reputation which he gained in Germany has not disappeared, even after facing difficulties in Madrid.

Former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti did describe Alonso as “one of the best in the world”, and that shows given how he strives for marginal improvement in every facet of the game. And while that was seen as micromanaging the players at Madrid, it is exactly what Tottenham needs at the moment.

With formal talks already underway, Xabi Alonso’s name is one that Tottenham supporters may want to get very used to in the coming weeks.
