Tottenham hit major spending milestone since Pochettino exit with Gallagher transfer

Tottenham seem to have underachieved in recent years despite spending a fortune on new players.

Tottenham exceeded all expectations last season after lifting the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou’s guidance. It was the Lilywhites’ first major trophy in 17 years and also secured qualification for the current Champions League campaign. The Australian tactician stayed true to his word and managed to make history by delivering European silverware against all odds.

Despite their success on the continental stage, the North Londoners still appear some distance away from competing with their closest Premier League rivals. Many believe a lack of sustained investment in the squad has contributed to this gap. Clubs such as Manchester City and Chelsea have consistently found a way to invest heavily in their squads during every transfer window.

As a result, Spurs supporters have often felt neglected by the board, with the primary focus seemingly placed on the financial side of the game. This was one of the main reasons Daniel Levy was relieved of his duties as Executive Chairman, as the Lewis family looked to prioritise sporting success instead. However, the numbers suggest the criticism directed at Levy may have been overly harsh.

Tottenham not shy of splashing the cash in recent years

Tottenham fans were pleased to see the club show real intent in last summer’s transfer window, with the Lilywhites spending close to £180m on eight new signings. It marked a refreshing change for supporters who had grown accustomed to a lack of ambition in the market. That approach has continued into January, with the club again spending big on their latest addition, Conor Gallagher.

A striking statistic has emerged following the confirmation of Gallagher’s £35m move from Atletico Madrid. According to The Telegraph, Spurs’ recent spending means that since January 2020, only Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs have invested more in new players than the North Londoners (£979m). The Lilywhites have outspent current league leaders Arsenal and are on course to surpass the £1bn mark in total transfer expenditure in the coming months.

During this period, Spurs have also completed a club-record signing with the £65m arrival of Dominic Solanke. Other high-profile additions to N17 include Richarlison (£60m), Mohammed Kudus (£55m) and Xavi Simons (£52m). The same report highlights that Gallagher is the 50th player signed by the club since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, underlining the ongoing instability at Tottenham.

Despite spending more than Liverpool and Arsenal in recent years, the Lilywhites have had little to show for it. They continue to struggle for consistent silverware and have fallen short in both European and domestic competitions. Spurs, alongside Arsenal, have won the fewest trophies in this six-year period, although it is worth noting that the Gunners have at least shown steady progress and are on course to finish this campaign as Premier League champions.

So, is spending more money really the right path forward for the Lilywhites? Or is it time to focus on smarter recruitment, investing in players who suit the manager’s system and can contribute to long-term success at N17? Only time will tell.
