Tottenham plans revealed as Gallagher signing halts pursuit of Premier League-winning midfielder until summer

Tottenham were looking to sign a Premier League midfielder before settling for Conor Gallagher.

Tottenham Hotspur made the signing of Conor Gallagher official on Wednesday evening, having beaten Aston Villa to his services. The central midfielder, who has arrived from Atletico Madrid, will be raring to make an immediate impact at his new club and become a fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank described Conor Gallagher as a “top midfielder” and highlighted the mix of qualities that made the club sign him. To get the best out of the 25-year-old, Thomas Frank has to use him in a box-to-box role next to a cultured No.6 in the ilk of Joao Palhinha. The England international is a high-energy, tenacious and dogged player, someone who likes to break into the final third and finish off chances.

Despite Gallagher potentially solving several issues in the middle of the park for Thomas Frank’s side, the Spurs recruitment team think they are still lacking one midfield player. As per recent reports, the Lilywhites are looking to sign a ‘midfield connector’ in 2026, with a deep-lying creative playmaker on their list of top targets.

John Wenham gives his verdict on Curtis Jones’ links with Tottenham

It has emerged that Tottenham had Liverpool academy graduate Curtis Jones on their list of targets when they entered the market for a central midfielder. Eventually, they settled for Gallagher as the new midfielder that Frank was desperate for.

Reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has now given his opinion on the links between Curtis Jones and Tottenham. He finds it difficult to see the club signing him as it has halted his pursuit, after Gallagher’s arrival, but it is a name that can be revisited in the summer.

“Interesting one that I heard about, I heard that Tottenham may look for Curtis Jones,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I don’t know if he is available, or how much he is playing this season, but we are looking for a midfielder that can create.

“I don’t think so [it will happen after Gallagher], but it may be one they revisit in the summer as he’ll only have 12 months left on Liverpool deal.”

Indeed, it will be a difficult deal for Spurs to pull off in the January window, as Liverpool are reluctant to part ways with Jones in the midst of the campaign, but the North London outfit could push hard for the England international in the summer. The 24-year-old has become integral to Arne Slot’s cause this season, making 18 appearances in the Premier League.

Jones is one of the most progressive midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues and would fit the bill perfectly as a ‘deep-lying’ playmaker for Tottenham, and the Englishman will enter the final 12 months of his contract in the summer. As there have been no talks over a contract renewal, Tottenham could look to take advantage of the situation and make an attempt to sign Jones from his boyhood club during the summer window.
