Thomas Frank reveals what convinced him and Tottenham to appoint ‘top guy’ John Heitinga

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of John Heitinga as Thomas Frank’s new Assistant Manager. Heitinga arrives in north London after most recently working as Ajax head coach, a role that demands technical authority, bravery in possession, and the ability to improve young players under constant pressure.

He also comes off the back of a Premier League title-winning campaign as assistant manager under Arne Slot at Liverpool, giving him first-hand experience of what a top-level, high-intensity environment looks like on a daily basis, while earlier work at West Ham adds further know-how of the league’s grind and tactical variety.

Speaking of the appointment, here is what Thomas Frank told the press [h/t Tottenham Hotspur website]:

“Yeah, it was a process we did together. Of course, I was a big part of it, and of course, Johan, Fabio and I were the main drivers of that. I think he was a standout candidate with everything he has experienced. Of course, obviously a top playing career, that is one thing, but also, how he then did after that in terms of his experience in the Academy of Ajax. Of course, when you play there, that is one thing, but when you also go back and coach there, that is one of the best academies in the world.”

“So, he walked the hard way, and then on top of that had two good experiences in the Premier League in West Ham and Liverpool. I have also been trying to stand out there, where there is a bit more noise and wind sometimes. That gave him a perfect profile. And then, of course, I met him now a few times before, and all the character reference we took, just a top guy, top integrity, top football person.”

A look back at John Heitinga’s career

On the pitch, Heitinga’s coaching background points towards a modern, front-foot approach that fits Tottenham’s need for a sharper identity. His Ajax education leans heavily towards proactive possession, positional discipline, and building attacks with purpose rather than simply circulating the ball.

At Liverpool, he has been immersed in a more aggressive, high-tempo model, with coordinated pressing, quick vertical progression, and constant pressure on opponents after turnovers.

That mix is valuable for Spurs, who have too often looked caught between styles this season, especially when games become stretched and their midfield structure collapses.

There is also a psychological element. Tottenham’s season has been weighed down by uncertainty and noise, and assistants matter more than people admit. Heitinga’s presence should raise the level in training, reinforce standards, and add a voice Frank can trust to deliver uncomfortable messages when performance levels drop. With injuries to key players, Spurs cannot rely on talent alone. They need organisation and collective belief.
