Tottenham have ready-made backup plans for Thomas Frank amid Pochettino links

Thomas Frank might end up losing his job at Tottenham in the coming days.

Tottenham fans have grown weary of watching their side struggle in domestic competitions in recent months. The Lilywhites have failed to maximise the potential and talent within their squad, with Thomas Frank unable to bring the best out of his players during the first half of the campaign. There have been no clear signs of progress under the Danish tactician this season.

In hindsight, the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou and replace him with Frank has not paid off for the North Londoners. Postecoglou defied the odds and rewrote history by winning the Europa League last season. Yet, Spurs opted to move him on and appoint Thomas Frank as they looked to build on the foundations laid by Big Ange.

Frank promised the Spurs faithful that his side would compete on all four fronts this season as they aimed to build on last year’s Europa League success. However, it is fair to say that the Danish tactician has failed to live up to those expectations, with early exits from both domestic cup competitions derailing their hopes of silverware.

Tottenham viewing Mauricio Pochettino as Thomas Frank’s long-term successor

Thomas Frank has also struggled to manage expectations following Tottenham’s slow start to the domestic campaign. His side currently languish in the bottom half of the Premier League table, having won just seven of their 22 matches. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Danish tactician is finding it difficult to move the club forward, with the worst points-per-game ratio of any Spurs manager in the last decade.

As a result, it comes as little surprise that the North Londoners are considering replacing Frank midway through the season. Recent reports suggest the Dane is on the brink of being sacked at N17 following a string of poor domestic results. The club are now exploring alternative managerial options that could steady the ship at Hotspur Way and help turn their fortunes around.

According to Matt Law (via The Telegraph), Spurs have not ruled out a romantic return to N17 for Mauricio Pochettino, as they seemingly have readymade backup plans. The Argentine tactician is currently in charge of the USMNT ahead of the upcoming World Cup but has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League and manage the Lilywhites for a second spell. Tottenham also view him as a long-term option, with any potential move likely to take place once the World Cup concludes in the summer.

Is Mauricio Pochettino the right man for Tottenham?

Tottenham supporters continue to look back fondly on Mauricio Pochettino’s time at N17. The Argentine consistently overachieved with a relatively depleted squad, guiding the club to multiple Premier League title challenges during his five-year tenure. He also led Spurs to an unlikely Champions League final, where they eventually fell short against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Few managers since Pochettino’s departure have gone on to enjoy sustained success at Spurs. The current USMNT boss fully understood the club’s identity, with his teams playing fast, free-flowing attacking football. They were devastating in transition, while the defence remained resolute, turning White Hart Lane into a fortress during his reign.

It is, therefore, no surprise that the Spurs faithful would welcome his return to N17 as the club looks to escape its current malaise. His arrival could instantly reconnect the team with the supporters once again. With the right backing this time, Pochettino might even achieve what once seemed impossible during his previous spell in North London. Whether the Lilywhites make an approach and offer him a route back to the Premier League remains to be seen.
