£200,000-per-week Tottenham star praised for running the show against Dortmund

Tottenham star Xavi Simons enjoyed a successful outing against Dortmund in the UCL.

Tottenham extended their unbeaten home run in European competition to 24 matches with a dominant Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund. The Lilywhites played with clear intent and were desperate to return to winning ways, with Thomas Frank’s job hanging in the balance. There were plenty of positives to take from the performance, as the North Londoners climbed to fourth place in the league table.

One of the standout performers for Spurs was summer signing Xavi Simons. The Dutchman was at the heart of almost every attacking move, finding pockets of space in central areas and linking play effectively. He played a key role during quick transitions and made the most of his opportunity in the No.10 role. Although he did not register a goal contribution against Dortmund, the 22-year-old showed enough quality to justify a starting spot in the upcoming clash against Burnley.

According to Sofascore, Simons was handed a 7.4 match rating for his impressive display against the Bundesliga giants. He recorded an 82% pass completion rate, had 69 touches of the ball and created one big chance. The Dutchman also won two of his three attempted tackles while making seven ball recoveries. It was a complete performance from the 22-year-old, who offered a glimpse of his true potential on the biggest stage.

Tottenham star Xavi Simons proved his worth against Dortmund

Tottenham fans were delighted to see £200,000-per-week Xavi Simons play through the pain-barrier after the midfielder revealed that he had injured his ankle in the build-up to the Dortmund clash. Despite the setback, he stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes and produced a dominant display for the Lilywhites as they returned to winning ways under Thomas Frank.

Henry Winter has since praised Simons’ efforts against Dortmund, with the 22-year-old emerging as one of Spurs’ standout performers on the night. Taking to X, Winter said,

“Xavi Simons’ best game for Spurs. Against 10 men so had more space, used it well. Bursts of pace, positivity and some perfectly-weighted passes. What Spurs were hoping for when they paid £51m in the summer. Still only 22.”

Winter went on to suggest that the Dortmund match was Xavi Simons’ best outing in a Spurs shirt. The Dutchman consistently found space in the half-spaces and linked midfield with attack, playing a crucial role in the build-up to both goals. He brought much-needed energy and intensity in the final third, allowing the North Londoners to play on the front foot and sustain pressure. According to Winter, the performance showed clear signs of the potential that convinced the Lilywhites to invest heavily in him during the summer.

The responsibility now falls on Xavi Simons to carry this form into the Premier League, with Spurs set to visit Turf Moor to face Burnley this weekend. All eyes will be on the Lilywhites as Thomas Frank looks for consistency and a return to winning ways in domestic competition. Securing three points alone will not be enough, as the performance must also reflect the result.

Will Simons build on his impressive showing against Dortmund, or will it prove to be another false dawn for the Spurs faithful? Only time will tell. What is clear, however, is that the 22-year-old has likely cemented his place in the starting eleven for the crucial clash against Scott Parker’s Burnley side.
