Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall is set for an extended spell on the sidelines following the latest ankle surgery.
Tottenham Hotspur’s injury crisis has worsened in recent weeks, putting head coach Thomas Frank in a spot of bother.
The Lilywhites are currently missing several first-team players through injury, including Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, who are both yet to feature this season after sustaining injuries last year. Thomas Frank has lost Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus and Ben Davies for several months due to respective injury problems, while Richarlison has been ruled out for seven weeks due to a hamstring issue.
Lucas Bergvall is the latest Spurs player to enter the treatment room. The midfielder sustained an ankle injury in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League earlier this week. Reports that followed left the fans in total disbelief as it suggested he could be out for two to three months.
Thomas Frank also gave a grim injury update on Lucas Bergvall ahead of the Burnley game, claiming it is a “bigger one”. And those fears of the fans and Thomas Frank has now turned into reality.

Lucas Bergvall undergoes ankle surgery
Tottenham have confirmed that Lucas Bergvall has undergone surgery on his left ankle after suffering an injury against Dortmund. He will now commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff.
The Sweden international started in Tottenham’s Champions League win over Dortmund but was withdrawn with just over an hour played after a strong tackle. He was replaced by academy talent Junai Byfield to make his senior debut for the Lilywhites.
This latest setback only adds to what has become a hugely frustrating season for Bergvall. The teenage prodigy has struggled with fitness issues all season. The central midfielder missed games in November with concussion, and he was also forced off during the win at Crystal Palace in December. His injury comes at a busy time in the season, with Tottenham’s fixture list about to get extremely busy over the next few weeks.
Now that Bergvall has gone under the knife, he is definitely going to be out for months, or maybe the season is over for him. The youngster’s injury setback further stretches the Lilywhites’ squad, adding more pressure to the already beleaguered boss Thomas Frank. No wonder, Spurs are the second-most affected team in the league after Newcastle United when it comes to injuries this season.
With the Stockholm-born talent and Bentancur now sidelined for months, Pape Matar Sarr falling ill during the AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco last weekend, and Joao Palhinha touch-and-go for the Burnley fixture, Frank is really short of options in the middle of the park. This could force the club bosses to dip into the transfer market for another midfielder this month after bringing in Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid last week.
