Tottenham are hoping to bring in additional reinforcements in the winter before the transfer window shuts.
Tottenham are finding it difficult to carve out positive results in the Premier League this season. The Lilywhites have won just seven of their opening 23 matches in the competition, leaving them in the bottom half of the league table. There is a real chance that they could find themselves dragged into a relegation battle if no action is taken to improve the squad before the ongoing January transfer window closes.
The North Londoners did well to bring in Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid on a long-term deal. Spurs hijacked the move at the eleventh hour to secure the England international after it was confirmed that Rodrigo Bentancur would remain on the sidelines for a considerable period. Fans are hoping that the same show of intent continues if the Lilywhites are to add more reinforcements in the coming days.

The Lewis family had promised the club a £150m “war chest” in the winter, which would allow Thomas Frank to sign players capable of strengthening the squad for the rest of the campaign. However, the ENIC shareholders are yet to stay true to their word and have struggled to address the glaring issues in the squad that continue to hamper the club’s progress.
Tottenham face a new problem if they sign players in the winter
Tottenham’s lack of early movement in the transfer market means the Lilywhites now face the risk of missing out on several key targets in January. The North Londoners have not done enough in the window to earn the backing of the fans. As a result, Thomas Frank has been left to deal with the club’s injury crisis using the players already at his disposal, due to the club’s inability to conduct sufficient business in the transfer window.
Dan Plumley has now suggested that Spurs may be forced to overpay for players in the ongoing transfer window, as other clubs could look to take advantage of their situation. Speaking to Tottenham News, Plumley said,
“It does create that environment where clubs will know that you are under pressure( due to the injury crisis). So when they go for deals like Conor Gallagher and others of that mix, clubs know your situation, and the price tag is likely to go up, and they’ll look to exploit it for their own gain.”
The finance expert added,
“That then means you have to fork out a little more, and that comes down to the ownership structure, and what they want to do and what they are prepared to pay.”
Plumley claims that other clubs are aware Spurs are under pressure to sign players in the winter due to the ongoing injury crisis at N17. As a result, potential sellers could raise their asking prices and force the Lilywhites to overpay in an attempt to exploit the North London club’s desperate situation for their own gain. Therefore, the Lewis family must decide whether to spend the extra money and back Thomas Frank, or persist with the current squad and hope for the best this season.
The time has come for Spurs to spend heavily on new players and give Thomas Frank a fair chance to build on last season’s Europa League success. The Lilywhites are without key players such as Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Richarlison, Ben Davies, and Dejan Kulusevski due to long-term injuries. As a result, it would be only right for the Lewis family to sanction a few transfer moves, even if it means overpaying for new additions in the coming days.
