Tottenham starlet to join Mansfield Town on loan.
Tottenham are continuing to manage their academy loans ahead of the January deadline, with George Abbott set to join Mansfield Town on a straight loan until the end of the season.
That is as per The Standard. The 20-year-old midfielder will head out again in search of regular first-team minutes after returning early from a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers, who are two positions over Mansfield in the League One standings. Abbott made 14 appearances across all competitions for Wycombe, but his role diminished significantly as the campaign progressed, with the midfielder seeing himself omitted from 12 of their final 13 league matchday squads before coming back to North London.
The switch to Mansfield is therefore less about a step up or down in level and more about finding the right environment. Spurs believe Abbott needs consistent football, not just exposure, and Mansfield’s interest suggests they see him as someone who can contribute immediately rather than rotate in and out of the side.
More Loan Moves at Tottenham
Abbott remains well thought of at Tottenham, but this season has highlighted how fine the margins are for young midfielders trying to break through. Ideally, he should remain around the first-team, considering how thin we stand in terms of squad depth but it is what it is.
He is not the only academy graduate to leave on Deadline Day. Under-21s captain Callum Olusesi is also attracting strong loan interest from clubs in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. Tottenham have already rejected bids from Hoffenheim and Eindhoven to make it clear that they have no intention of selling Olusesi permanently.
Spurs would prefer Olusesi to remain in England, with several Championship sides keen on a loan, but the midfielder is understood to favour a move abroad to accelerate his development. At the back, centre-half Alfie Dorrington is also closing in on another loan move, with Salford City in League Two keen to take him for the remainder of the campaign after a disrupted spell at Aberdeen earlier in the season.
Beyond the academy exits, Deadline Day also will bring clarity on several senior squad situations, including the futures of Randal Kolo Muani, Mathys Tel, and Radu Dragusin, among others.
