Paul Merson advises Tottenham to snap up free agent who has already played for 2 London clubs

Tottenham had a quiet transfer deadline day despite Thomas Frank’s squad being ravaged by injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur have struggled to produce positive results in the Premier League. They are winless in the league in 2026, and that speaks volumes about how poor Thomas Frank’s side have been.

One of the most glaring issues within the squad is Spurs’ inability to deliver consistently in attack. Injuries have played a big role in that, with creative talents James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski yet to feature this season. The wide players continue to disappoint, while marquee summer signing Xavi Simons needs to do more in the final third to make the team tick.

Tottenham fans were eager to see a fresh face arrive in Thomas Frank’s squad on transfer deadline day, but nothing happened. This means the N17 chiefs eventually failed to reinforce the wide department, despite selling Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace in the first week of the winter window.

Paul Merson tips Tottenham to snap up Raheem Sterling on a free transfer

As per a report from The Daily Mail, Tottenham are one of the sides to be credited with an interest in Raheem Sterling.

The England international is currently a free agent after terminating his contract with Chelsea by mutual agreement in January. He was part of the so-called bomb squad during manager Enzo Maresca’s time at Stamford Bridge, having failed to muster a single minute this season. The 31-year-old is ready to take a hefty wage cut from what he earned at Chelsea and wants to get straight back into the game. It is worth noting that he had a dismal loan outing at Arsenal as well, in 2024-25.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has now tipped Tottenham to sign Raheem Sterling on a free transfer after he terminated his contract with Chelsea last month.

“They need players in. Thomas Frank and Tottenham have been unlucky with Solanke, Kulusevski and Maddison all out,” Paul Merson said on Sky Sports.

“I would bring Sterling in. I think it’s a no-brainer on a free transfer. I really do.

“You don’t want to start bringing every Tom, Dick and Harry in to try and stay up. They just need one or two players in and get their players fit.”

There is no questioning Sterling’s ability or experience. The Englishman is a decorated player, having tasted huge success during his eight-year stint with Manchester City. A move to Chelsea did not work out for him, while he failed to impress during his loan spell with Arsenal last season either.

The main sticking point could be the 31-year-old’s lack of match fitness, having not played at all this season. However, with the transfer market now closed and several Tottenham attackers on the sidelines, the Lilywhites must take a punt on Sterling. If he is ready to agree on a five-month contract, Spurs must snap him up as quickly as possible.
