Journo highlights what will give Thomas Frank ‘some new life’ as Tottenham continue to languish at 14th in the table

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham squad has been decimated by injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur’s resilience against Manchester City last weekend would have surprised the fans. Trailing 2-0 at the break, Thomas Frank’s boys mounted an incredible comeback to secure a point, showcasing grit, character and determination in the face of difficulty.

Presently, Spurs are dealing with an injury crisis. Several key players in recent weeks have entered the treatment room. Kevin Danso and Djed Spence were the latest casualties, dropping out of the squad against Manchester City on Sunday. Creative talents James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have been sidelined since last year and have yet to feature under Thomas Frank this season.

After the Man City fixture, skipper Cristian Romero delivered an honest and explosive assessment of the current squad. He took a sly dig at the club’s hierarchy after the winter window slammed shut with just two new faces arriving at White Hart Lane.

Keith Wyness feels Spurs will start performing better once key players return from injuries

Persistent injury problems have massively impacted Tottenham’s season. The constant chopping and changing of personnel have prevented the Lilywhites from getting any sort of stability and momentum, much to the frustration of the gaffer and the fans.

Now, former Aston Villa and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness feels Tottenham will be rejuvenated as a unit once Frank has a fully fit squad to pick from. He does not think they are in danger of relegation, and their form will improve once key players return from injuries in the coming weeks and months.

“Well, we talked about this and was it going to be a sign of backing Thomas Frank? Well, Conor Gallagher was certainly, I think, a good signing, and he proved that in the second half, to a degree, in the game of two halves at the weekend,” Keith Wyness spoke on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast (h/t Football Insider).

“But I think you have got, and I was amazed when I actually looked at that injury list, just what is on there, and it’s amazing the number of players that Spurs, of the high-quality players they’ve got, on that injury list.

“So, there’s no doubt that the people at the top of Spurs are going to be saying, well, hang on. Look, if we do back you and bring in somebody 40, 50, 60 million, what happens when all these come back in the next few weeks? So, I think they’ve just taken that point of view that they’re not really in trouble.

“I don’t believe they’ll get into any relegation fight. So, I think they’re going to have to rebuild, and it’s been the injuries that have really ruined this season. I think it’ll give Frank some new life as people come back from injury. I think they’ll get the squad stabilised, he’ll start to push forward.”

Tottenham should have added more to their squad

There is no doubt that the team’s performance levels will improve once key players start returning from injuries, providing a much-needed stability. Having said that, however, it cannot be overlooked that the current squad is not up to the level required to challenge for the European spots.

So, the N17 chiefs needed to use the winter window to improve the squad beyond Gallagher and Souza’s signings, but they missed a glorious opportunity and have now hung Frank out to dry. The board, Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange have let the Dane down, and the 52-year-old will pay the price eventually if there are no changes in results.
