Stock rises as Tottenham’s winter offer deemed ‘not enough’ for 23-year-old attacking midfielder from Serie A

Tottenham had a rather underwhelming January transfer window.

Antonio Vergara has had this rapid rise to the ranks at Napoli, which has not gone unnoticed at Hotspur Way, as Tottenham Hotspur tried to secure his signature in the recently concluded winter transfer window.

The 23-year-old was away on loan spells to Reggiana and Pro Vercelli ahead of the ongoing campaign. Things looked all set for him to move away from Napoli on a permanent transfer, but an injury crisis at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona handed him an opportunity, and he has grabbed that with both hands.

Tottenham tried to sign Antonio Vergara

Tottenham were looking to bring in Antonio Vergara in the recently concluded winter window

According to a recent report from TuttoSport, the Lilywhites made a direct approach to bring him to North London and were willing to come up with a figure around €20m to sign Vergara. But that didn’t move Napoli even a bit.

The 23-year-old has been keeping players on the edge of their seats every time he touches the ball. He is quite direct and has this end product in him. You can go back to the goal that he scored against Chelsea, where he left Wesley Fofana behind before his fine finish.

And now Napoli are keen to keep him. They feel that his recent performances are only the start of what he can offer at the top level.

The aforementioned report aids that belief perfectly, given that Tottenham’s failed pursuit of his signature was met with a headline, ‘Bye Bye Spurs’.

Since the commencement of 2026, Vergara has been more of a regular in Antonio Conte’s side. That goal vs Chelsea was followed by another against Fiorentina at the weekend. You can see that he is playing with a sense of confidence. The 23-year-old has this composure complemented by his willingness to take on defenders, which has made him a key cog for his current employers.

And Napoli are looking at this as more of a breakout moment than just a purple patch.

Author Opinion

For Tottenham this is another case of all shouts and no show, very much like the trend of the January window. The chiefs at Hotspur Way kept on exploring attacking options for Thomas Frank, but they fell short in bringing in reinforcements in key areas, and that would be down to either valuation gaps or the fact that clubs were not willing to sanction a sale mid-season.

While we may see Vergara’s name coming back up again in the upcoming windows, for now Napoli continue to hold their stance over his future.
