Tottenham exit the UEFA Youth League after 5-1 defeat to Real Betis.
Tottenham’s Under-19s saw their UEFA Youth League campaign end disappointingly with a 5-1 defeat to Real Betis at Ciudad Deportiva Luis Del Sol on Wednesday evening.
According to TottenhamHotspur.com, despite taking an early lead through Luca Williams-Barnett after just five minutes, the Spanish domestic champions stormed back with four first-half goals to effectively end the contest before halftime. Rodrigo Marina completed his hat-trick after the restart to compound Tottenham’s misery.
Spurs had entered the match in Andalusia as the competition’s top scorers and started brightly in difficult conditions. Tynan Thompson burst down the left and delivered an excellent low cross, with Reiss Elliott-Parris creating space for Williams-Barnett to slide home from the edge of the box.

However, Betis responded emphatically. Morante equalized on 22 minutes, cutting inside from the right and finishing cutely inside the near post. Marina’s stooping header squirmed through goalkeeper Dylan Thompson’s grasp four minutes later before Jean Emmanuel N’Agoran smartly volleyed a corner into the top corner on 32 minutes.
Thompson endured a difficult evening between the posts and will be disappointed with several of Betis’ goals. His performance reached a nadir just before halftime when he came to the edge of his area to meet the ball but missed his kick, allowing Marina to stroll through and slot into an empty net for 4-1.
Elliott-Parris put a big chance wide on 39 minutes after latching onto Williams-Barnett’s cut-back, but the damage was already done. Marina completed his treble just before the hour mark when a corner from Ruben De Sa Abreu caught Tottenham out, allowing the captain to fire home unchallenged.
Williams-Barnett produced several mesmerizing solo runs throughout the match but couldn’t make them count. Center-backs Malachi Hardy and Elijah Upson worked hard to withstand Betis’ physical prowess and rapid pace down the flanks but were ultimately overwhelmed.
Tottenham’s misery was compounded when hard-working left-back Harry Byrne was forced off injured, with Williams-Barnett also departing the action at the same time. Substitute Ellis Lehane swiped the final chance high over the bar in the closing moments as Spurs’ journey in the competition came to a halt.
The defeat ends what had been a promising UEFA Youth League campaign for Tottenham’s youngsters. Despite the heavy loss, the experience gained from competing at this level will prove valuable for the development of players including Williams-Barnett, Elliott-Parris, Hardy, and Upson.
Betis progress to the round of 16 after a comprehensive performance that showcased their technical quality and physical dominance. Their ability to exploit spaces down the flanks and capitalize on defensive errors proved decisive against a Tottenham side that struggled to cope with the intensity after conceding the equalizer.
The young Spurs will now refocus on domestic competition, using the lessons learned from this European campaign to continue their development under academy coaching staff.
