Tottenham send scouts to watch Hoffenheim midfielder who is referred to as ‘right-footed Granit Xhaka’

Tottenham have been scouting a talent from the Bundesliga since the start of the 2025/26 season.

Tottenham Hotspur moved quickly to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid after learning about Rodrigo Bentancur’s hamstring injury. But, Gallagher remained the only marquee acquisition for the Lilywhites in the past winter transfer window, leaving the supporters extremely dissatisfied.

The Lewis Family granting a £150m “war chest” for the winter window turned out to be futile eventually. Several glaring issues within the squad should have been addressed to help Thomas Frank take the team out of this rut. Securing big names in the mid-season trading period was not easy, but Tottenham’s lack of appetite after bringing in the likes of Gallagher and Souza was concerning.

Thomas Frank has faced growing scrutiny for failing to get the best out of his squad during the first half of the season. Whether he remains at the helm to oversee a transition remains to be seen, but it looks like Tottenham have started putting plans in place for the summer transfer window.

Tottenham scout Hoffenheim midfielder Leon Avdullahu

According to a report from fussballeck (h/t telegrafi), Tottenham have sent scouts to every Hoffenheim game this season to watch midfielder Leon Avdullahu in action. They have come to the conclusion that the Hoffenheim man, often likened to, Granit Xhaka (the right-footed version) is an ‘ideal fit’ for the intense style of play in the Premier League.

Several other European clubs, like AC Milan, have also shown concrete interest in the 21-year-old, who has been a revelation in the Bundesliga this season since arriving from FC Basel in June 2025. Leon Avdullahu has quickly established himself as a reliable midfielder in the German top-flight, making 20 appearances.

The report adds (h/t telegrafi) Hoffenheim are demanding between €35 million and €45 million for the five-cap Kosovan international.

Avdullahu could become Joao Palhinha’s long-term replacement

Spurs signed Joao Palhinha on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich last summer, with an option to buy. The defensive midfielder quickly became a key cog in Frank’s system, bringing much-needed balance to the starting XI. While he has done well, the north Londoners are yet to trigger the 31-year-old’s buy option.

Should Tottenham sign Palhinha permanently, the Portuguese international would just be a stopgap solution to their problems in midfield. Simultaneously, they must have a succession plan for Palhinha in place, and someone like Avdullahu could be a smart option.

The Hoffenheim talent would represent a long-term investment and could form a solid midfield partnership with Gallagher. He is more than just a defensive midfielder; the Kosovan international regularly plays line-breaking passes and has the ability to influence games at both ends of the pitch. If Avdullahu continues to shine for the German side and also makes an impression in the World Cup qualifiers in March, his value could easily skyrocket beyond the €45 million mark.

All in all, Tottenham must continue monitoring the 21-year-old’s progress at Hoffenheim.
