Tottenham are coming off a rather underwhelming transfer window.
Tottenham have had quite a few transfer tussles against Arsenal in recent years, and it looks like the North London clubs will resume that off-the-pitch rivalry once again when next summer comes around.
If we go to the last summer window, the Gunners comfortably delivered a knockout punch to Spurs when they hijacked Eberechi Eze’s transfer from under Daniel Levy’s nose.
And now Arsenal are in the race for another long-term Tottenham target in Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay.
Tottenham did reinforce their midfield in the recently concluded winter transfer window, as the chiefs at Hotspur Way brought in Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid by pulling an Eze-hat of their own from under Aston Villa’s noses. And the England international has made an encouraging start since arriving in N17.
But it is clear that Tottenham had to bring in another midfielder who plays more on the front foot in January, but that didn’t happen. Though that also means that the supporters expect the Lilywhites to go into the summer window with a keen eye to revisit the midfield needs at hand.
And that is where McTominay emerges into the picture once again…
Tottenham will have to compete with Arsenal to sign McTominay
According to a recent report from AreaNapoli, Frank & Co. remain interested in McTominay and are monitoring his transformation in Serie A since he moved to Napoli from Manchester United.
The Scot has become a central figure for his current employers, where he played an important role in taking them to a Scudetto triumph last season.
The report goes on to claim that while Tottenham remain admirers of the 29-year-old, they are not alone, with Arsenal also said to be tracking the Utd academy graduate. To complicate matters for the Lilywhites, joining the North London duo is his former side, Manchester United, who are also mentioned as a possible suitor.
AreaNapoli goes on to state that Napoli are fully aware of the attention around their midfielder. They are already planning talks with his representatives over a new long-term contract at the end of the ongoing season. It would take an offer in excess of €100m (£86.8m) to get them on the table to consider selling McTominay.
Author Opinion
When it comes to fees, this effectively rules out Tottenham knowing how the Lilywhites go about their business. He would certainly be an excellent player in the current setup under Frank, but right now the Dane’s own future hangs by a thread.
