Tottenham’s injury problems deepen as young left-back just can’t catch a break

The star was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury in the second half of Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Tottenham Hotspur’s search for their first Premier League win in 2026 continued as they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. A revitalised Manchester United side under Michael Carrick capitalised on Cristian Romero’s red card to pile more misery on Thomas Frank and Spurs.

Bryan Mbeumo scored from a well-worked corner shortly after Romero saw red for a reckless challenge on Casemiro in the 29th minute. Before the Argentine’s dismissal, the game was evenly poised with Tottenham doing everything possible to frustrate the hosts. The Red Devils grew into the game after taking the lead via Mbeumo and tested Guglielmo Vicario in the Tottenham goal a fair few times.

The majority of the second half was played in Spurs’ half, as Man United produced attack after attack. Thomas Frank’s side, despite going a man down, showed great resilience and character and managed to keep the Mancunian giants at arm’s length until the 81st minute. Bruno Fernandes delivered the knockout blow to the Lilywhites with a clever finish off Diogo Dalot’s cross, helping his side win four games on the bounce.

As for Tottenham, it was yet another gloomy day in the office. While Romero will now miss the next four games following his red card, Thomas Frank was dealt another defensive injury on Saturday.

Tottenham’s injury list grew as Destiny Udogie went off vs. Man United

To make matters even worse for Tottenham at Old Trafford, Destiny Udogie limped off to worsen their injury crisis, and he was replaced by January signing Souza in the 55th minute. The left-back has a past with hamstring issues, and the way he trudged off the pitch looked likely tied to his recent muscle concerns.

Destiny Udogie made a bright start to his Tottenham career, but since undergoing hamstring surgery in the 2023/24 season, he has struggled for fitness. The Italian missed 11 games last season due to a hamstring injury, and the left-back has already entered the treatment table thrice this campaign. Having already sat out 13 games, the Tottenham defender looks set for another spell on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old is unlikely to feature against Newcastle United on February 10. Udogie’s injury means Frank’s full-back options are now down to bare bones, with Djed Spence, Pedro Porro and Ben Davies already in the treatment room. This would open the door for Souza to get a run in the side, having made his Tottenham bow in the 2-0 defeat to United.

Spurs supporters will be anxiously waiting to know the timescale of Udogie’s injury ahead of a rough run of fixtures.
