How much Tottenham have spent on sacking managers compared to Big Six rivals

Thomas Frank was recently sacked by the Tottenham board.

Tottenham Hotspur as a club have never been shy to make a change on the touchline when results are not going the Lilywhites’ way. To go back to one of the more talked about sacks to date is when Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties before a League Cup final. Another one is the Ange Postecoglou departure, where the Australian gaffer was shown the door after delivering Europa League success.

And as we know, such turnovers generally cost the club heavily.

If we look at the numbers, then since 2001, Tottenham have dismissed 15 managers, which just gives us a glimpse of how rocky the life has been at Hotspur Way over the past couple of decades.

With Daniel Levy no longer within the corridors at N17, many supporters hoped that the next era at Tottenham would be one of stability. But that didn’t last long, as the Lilywhites dismissed Thomas Frank from his services at the helm at Tottenham earlier today.

Tottenham’s spend on sacking managers

These changes are costing the club quite dearly. According to the numbers given by Football Blog, only Chelsea have spent more when it comes to managerial compensation than Tottenham in the Premier League era.

Let us look at those numbers for once:

  • Chelsea – £161.6m
  • Tottenham Hotspur – £66.5m
  • Manchester United – £62.03m
  • Liverpool – £50.8m
  • Arsenal – £29.3m
  • Manchester City – £24.25m

If we go into individual numbers at Hotspur Way, there were some high-profile exits that cost the club hefty money.

  • Nuno Espirito Santo (2021) – £14m
  • Mauricio Pochettino (2019) – £12.5m
  • Jose Mourinho (2021) – £11m

There is one thing about Tottenham fans: they only ask for an attractive brand of football which is catchy on the eye and has that enjoyment about it. And we have not had that at N17 for a while now. Levy strived and strived for getting a coach who would play that enticing brand of football, and the closest he came was with Mauricio Pochettino, who took the club to great heights, albeit keeping in touch with a playing style that the supporters enjoyed.

These frequent sackings leave the club at base zero every few months. No projects are taken to their heights like this. Tottenham needs stability.
