Robbie Keane’s stance on taking up Tottenham managerial role emerges after club icon’s blunt response

Robbie Keane walks out on interview over Tottenham question

Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial situation has taken yet another strange twist, and the latest chapter features club icon Robbie Keane giving one of the most telling but unhelpful responses you could imagine when asked about the vacant head coach role at his old club.

The Ferencvaros boss was speaking to the press after a comfortable 4-0 Hungarian Cup win. That is when he was politely asked whether he would expect an invitation to manage Spurs if the opportunity came up. Instead of opening up or deflecting with a measured comment, Keane visibly bristled and walked off after not saying anything with substance.

Keane said, “I can’t help speculation,” and walked off, effectively ending the interview and leaving everyone with more questions than answers. That is as per the Daily Mail. Here is a video of the same via X.

Who next?

The reaction of a club legend to that kind of question says a lot, even though he didn’t quite give a definitive answer. At 45 years old and currently enjoying success in Hungary, Keane has every reason to stay focused on his current project, and his body language and verbal language, of course, suggest he’s not keen to see himself at the core of speculation.

After Thomas Frank’s sacking following a defeat to Newcastle United and with Spurs sliding perilously close to the relegation zone, the question of who will take over has split opinion, and rightly so.

Roberto De Zerbi sees himself earmarked as the favourite to take over, with John Heitinga, Mauricio Pochettino, and Keane further down the list, but all of those names carry different implications for the club’s direction.

Ultimately, Tottenham’s next move may hinge on whether they pursue a stopgap caretaker, a long-term rebuild candidate, or someone who stands prepared to embrace the chaos rather than sidestep it. And that only makes the case for Mauricio Pochettino to take over much stronger than anyone else.
