Tottenham rejected enquiries from Chelsea and Aston Villa for 20-year-old midfielder who is sidelined until at least April

The midfielder has progressed well at Tottenham since joining in 2024.

Lucas Bergvall is one player who has truly impressed at struggling Tottenham Hotspur since his arrival from Swedish side Djurgarden IF in 2024.

The youngster was a key player for Spurs last season under Ange Postecoglou and was named the club’s Player of the Year after playing a key role in their Europa League triumph. This campaign has been a stop-start one for him; Lucas Bergvall started just 16 games under Thomas Frank, who was sacked earlier this week.

Frank occasionally used him as an advanced midfielder in the injury absences of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, as well as out wide. As the Swede has performed well in various midfield roles, his progress hasn’t gone unnoticed in the Premier League.

Tottenham rejected enquiries from Aston Villa and Chelsea for Lucas Bergvall

According to reputable journalist David Ornstein, Tottenham rejected enquiries from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Aston Villa for Lucas Bergvall in January.

Both Premier League rivals made direct contact with Spurs to explore a potential deal for the 20-year-old. Chelsea’s enquiry came around the time they were also evaluating Douglas Luiz, who ultimately joined Aston Villa after cutting short his Nottingham Forest loan, while Villa eyed Bergvall as a potential alternative to Conor Gallagher after missing out on the England international’s services to Tottenham last month.

The Swedish international suffered an ankle injury against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last month and has been ruled out for months. The midfielder has endured several injury lay-offs this term, with the latest ankle issue set to keep him sidelined until April.

Bergvall signed a new contract with the Lilywhites last year until 2031, so the club have no immediate concerns over his future. The Stockholm-born talent is considered a big part of the club’s future, meaning Spurs do not have any intentions to part ways with him in the summer and beyond.

However, the North Londoners missing out on a place in Europe next term could lead to speculation over his future. The likes of Chelsea and Villa could revive their interest in him, while several European clubs may look to tempt Bergvall with the idea of providing European football and a platform to hone his skills.

That said, it is important for the incoming interim manager Igor Tudor to not only help the club stay away from the drop zone, but also lead them to Europe.
