Igor Tudor sheds light on the ‘Alessandro Del Piero way’ he is looking to implement at Tottenham

Igor Tudor sends an ambitious message to Tottenham fans.

Tottenham’s new interim boss has delivered a stern warning about training standards following Thomas Frank’s sacking.

Igor Tudor will ensure his Tottenham Hotspur players maintain maximum intensity in training if his past comments are anything to go by, delivering a clear warning that underperforming stars won’t escape accountability.

The Croatian was announced as Spurs’ caretaker manager on Saturday following the dismissal of Thomas Frank, whose disastrous tenure ended with Tottenham languishing in 16th place and just five points above the relegation zone. Tudor faces the monumental task of hauling the club away from the Championship trapdoor.

The 47-year-old spent almost a decade at Juventus as a player, winning the Serie A title and reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2002/03. After retiring in 2008 with 229 appearances and 25 goals from center-half, Tudor transitioned into management.

His coaching career has been somewhat nomadic, taking in 10 different clubs across 12 different countries over the past 13 years. More recently, that includes a short spell at Juventus, where he was sacked, and a stint at Lazio, where he resigned after guiding the club on an impressive league run.

No excuses for poor standards

Speaking to DAZN last August, Tudor revealed exactly how he approaches training discipline when reflecting on his formative years in Italian football. He said (h/t football.london):

“Alessandro Del Piero used to get mad if we lost a game in training. That was the famous Juventus way.”

The former defender continued by outlining his uncompromising philosophy.

“I’m the same in life. It’s about talking in facts and leading by example. I’m a man of few words and don’t turn the other cheek when someone is out of line. You have to always be on it in training, because that way the game itself is easier.”

Those comments spell out clearly that Tottenham’s underperforming players won’t be able to coast through training sessions under the Croatian. With crucial matches approaching, including a Champions League round-of-16 tie, Tudor must implement his standards immediately.

Tudor faces a brutal introduction as Tottenham manager, with Arsenal visiting in the North London Derby on February 22 for his first match in charge. Trips to Fulham and Crystal Palace follow shortly after, meaning results must improve dramatically and quickly.

As per Football London, Tudor is adamant he’s ready for the challenge and understands the magnitude of his task. He acknowledged the responsibility handed to him in his first public comments.

“It is an honour to join this Club at an important moment. I understand the responsibility I have been handed and my focus is clear. To bring greater consistency to our performances and compete with conviction in every match. There is strong quality in this playing squad, and my job is to organise it, energise it and improve our results quickly.”

Tudor’s demanding approach represents a stark departure from Frank’s management style. Whether his no-nonsense methods can shock Tottenham’s complacent squad into salvaging their season remains to be seen, but his track record suggests he won’t tolerate the lackadaisical attitudes that contributed to Frank’s downfall. The players have been warned.
