Thomas Frank failed to turn Tottenham’s Premier League fortunes around during his time at N17.
Tottenham stunned the footballing world when they chose to sack Ange Postecoglou just days after the Australian ended the club’s long-standing trophy drought at the close of last season. The Lilywhites stated that they wanted a manager who could compete on all fronts and guide the club further up the Premier League table this term. As a result, the North Londoners appointed Thomas Frank as Big Ange’s successor.
It is fair to say that Frank enjoyed an impressive start at N17, winning seven of his first eight matches in charge of Spurs. The atmosphere around the club was upbeat, and it appeared that the Danish tactician had quickly found his footing. However, there was a noticeable shift immediately after the first international break, as the Lilywhites began dropping points in matches they were expected to win in the Premier League.
Heavy home defeats to London rivals West Ham United and Fulham further intensified the pressure on Thomas Frank. The loss in the north London derby only compounded matters, raising doubts about whether the Danish tactician truly aligned with the club’s cultural identity. His pragmatic approach and apparent acceptance of underwhelming performances did little to reassure supporters.
Tottenham decided to sack Thomas Frank after a dismal run in the league
Under Thomas Frank’s leadership, Tottenham won just two of their final 17 league matches, leaving the club stuck in the bottom half of the table. The persistent boos and jeers from supporters reflected their growing frustration and desire for change before the situation deteriorated further. Consequently, the club acted decisively and dismissed Frank midway through the season, with the home defeat to Newcastle United proving to be the final blow.
Johan Lange has since offered insight into the decision to part ways with Thomas Frank and explained how the Spurs hierarchy reached their conclusion. Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, Lange said,
“As the leaders, we of course constantly evaluate performances, we evaluate results. And after the Newcastle game, we made the decision. Ultimately, of course, it was a board decision. But we made the decision and that was why we decided it was the right time to change.”
The club’s Sporting Director added,
“Of course, we wanted to give Thomas every opportunity to succeed, but ultimately, it’s our responsibility to make the decisions. And we came to that point where we saw the performances, the results, and then you come to that decision. I think you saw over a period of time, with the performances and the results, why we came to that conclusion.”
Johan Lange explained that the Spurs hierarchy had been closely monitoring the team’s performances and felt that the defeat against Newcastle United marked the appropriate moment to relieve Thomas Frank of his duties. He added that the Lilywhites did everything possible to give the Danish tactician sufficient time to turn things around at N17, but the results ultimately failed to meet expectations.
Some may argue that the North London club delayed the decision for too long, especially with the team sitting just five points above the relegation zone at the time of his dismissal. However, as the saying goes, better late than never. Supporters will now be hoping that Igor Tudor can stabilise the situation at N17 and steer the club back to winning ways in the Premier League in the months ahead.
