Tottenham warned about the imminent relegation threat after Arsenal humiliation.
Jamie Redknapp delivered a blunt and sobering assessment of Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal, warning that the north London club are in serious danger of finding themselves in a different league in the most literal sense possible.
The Sky Sports pundit was unstinting in his praise for Arsenal, who he described as magnificent and completely in control from start to finish. But it was his verdict on Tottenham that will have made for uncomfortable viewing for supporters already fearing the worst about their club’s Premier League future. Redknapp said (h/t Sky Sports):
“It was a complete mismatch. They were in different leagues. Arsenal were so classy, they were so much better than Tottenham. It was like two different leagues. If Tottenham aren’t careful, they might be in a different league. They cannot keep performing like this.”
It is a damning summary of where Spurs find themselves. A club of their stature, with their infrastructure and their wage bill, being described as a potential Championship side in the same breath as an Arsenal team playing Champions League football is a measure of how dramatically the gap between north London’s two clubs has widened.
Redknapp believes Arsenal were “too good for Tottenham.”
Redknapp reserved particular praise for Arsenal’s attacking players. Viktor Gyokeres, who scored twice on his derby debut, led the line with authority, while Eberechi Eze was singled out as wonderful in a performance that showcased exactly the kind of quality and cohesion Tottenham currently lack at every level. The pundit added:
“Gyokeres led the line, Eze was wonderful. It was a brilliant performance. Arsenal were fantastic, too good for Tottenham.”
The verdict from one of the game’s most recognisable pundits reflects a growing consensus. This is not a Tottenham side going through a rough patch. This is a club in structural and psychological disarray, and the results are beginning to reflect that in the most alarming fashion.
Igor Tudor has spoken about humility, hard work, and the need to look in the mirror. After an afternoon like this, those words carry added urgency. The Championship is no longer an abstract fear. For Tottenham, it is a genuine and pressing danger.
