Tottenham boss Igor Tudor clears air on Micky van de Ven clip and Spurs fans might be relieved

Tottenham boss Igor Tudor talks about viral clip ‘confronting’ Micky van de Ven.

A short touchline clip from the North London derby quickly did the rounds online after cameras caught Igor Tudor animatedly urging Tottenham Hotspur’s back line to step higher while pressing Arsenal. In the background, Micky van de Ven appeared slow to react, and some viewers interpreted the moment as the defender ignoring instructions from the new interim head coach.

Given the scrutiny around Tottenham at the moment and the sensitivity surrounding authority after Thomas Frank’s departure, the clip took on a life of its own and was framed by some as evidence of confusion or disconnect between coach and players.

Tudor has now clarified that the moment was misunderstood and insisted the instruction was directed at the defensive unit as a whole rather than Van de Ven individually. This could possibly come as a relief to Tottenham fans.

Here’s what Tudor had to say about this clip, as per Alasdair Gold – via X.

“It was about the team where we needed to get up if we wanted to press high. In this moment maybe it is too much for them. Maybe that’s what the frustration is [from me].”

“If you watch carefully I don’t speak with him [in that moment], afterwards I said to him to come closer and he comes closer. In that moment it was for the whole defence. (contd)

“We didn’t talk about it because nothing happened. He’s a fantastic professional and a fantastic guy, he would not do something like this [ignore me].”

Clearing the air!

The entire fiasco, for the lack of a better word to suit the situation, says as much about Tottenham’s current environment as it does about the actual incident. Every gesture sees itself analysed after a turbulent season that has seen managerial upheaval, injuries and a slide down the table, so even routine tactical instructions can become talking points for social media. With the squad still adapting to a new coaching voice and a different style of play, moments of visible instruction on the touchline are inevitable.

If anything, the clip highlighted how quickly Tudor is trying to implement a more aggressive defensive line and coordinated press, something that will take time with a squad that has barely trained together fully because of injuries. Van de Ven, in particular, remains one of the key figures Tudor will rely on if Spurs are to stabilise in the final stretch of the season.

The reality appears far less dramatic than the viral version, and the incident was simply a coach demanding a higher defensive line rather than a player refusing to listen. Funny how social media can portray things fully on the contrary.
