Tottenham squad facing brutal financial reality if club gets relegated

Tottenham Hotspur players might face severe consequences in case of relegation.

Tottenham Hotspur players face wage cuts if the club are relegated from the Premier League, owing to clauses written into their contracts. Spurs are currently 16th in the top flight, only four points above the drop zone with 10 fixtures remaining.

That is as per The Athletic. They have not won a domestic game this calendar year and recently appointed Igor Tudor to replace Thomas Frank as head coach in an attempt to rescue their season.

However, the Croatian has overseen defeats in his opening two matches against Arsenal and Fulham. The possibility of Spurs falling into England’s second tier for the first time since 1977 is very, very real.

Daniel Levy, before taking off from Tottenham, oversaw a provision factored into all existing agreements which meant that, in an outside chance also, Spurs do not bleed loads of money. Visionary, from Levy, to say the least; even if it meant being a pessimistic leader who actually believed that the club could drop to the second division.

Tough times at Hotspur Way

Clubs do not write 50% salary reduction clauses into contracts unless they believe the risk is real, and right now Spurs sit 16th with only a small cushion above the bottom three after a disastrous run that has seen them fail to win a domestic match in 2026.

That reduction would be enormous by Premier League standards and would fundamentally change the financial reality for many players. These clauses protect the club from complete financial collapse, but they also make it extremely likely that key players would push for moves if the worst happened. Players with international ambitions or Champions League aspirations would not accept Championship football on half their current wages.

Tottenham are supposed to be competing for European places and building squads capable of challenging at the top end of the table, yet the current reality is survival mode. Two defeats under Igor Tudor against Arsenal and Fulham have not improved the situation, even if he inherited a broken squad and had almost no time to prepare. The pressure is now relentless because every dropped point tightens the squeeze and turns upcoming fixtures into must-win games.

There is also a psychological angle to this situation. Players know what relegation means for their careers and their income, and that pressure can either sharpen focus or create anxiety. Tottenham need the former, not the latter. The fear of wage cuts and potential exits should serve as motivation, but it can easily become a distraction if results do not improve quickly.
