10-man Tottenham were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace in a dramatic London derby.
Tottenham Hotspur were plunged even further into relegation trouble as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Crystal Palace.
Spurs are still without a win this calendar year, and their interim head coach, Igor Tudor, has lost all three of his matches in charge so far. He was handed a difficult start as the Tottenham boss, tasked with facing north London rivals Arsenal, who earned the bragging rights with a 4-1 success. The North Londoners then suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Fulham last Sunday, and now they’ve been beaten fair and square by Crystal Palace.
Igor Tudor’s side went into the game against Palace under serious pressure, and things went from bad to worse as Micky van de Ven was sent off in the first half. He was shown a red card for preventing a goalscoring opportunity when he brought down Ismaila Sarr after the Palace winger had outpaced him into the box. Referee Andrew Madley didn’t hesitate in brandishing a straight red card to the centre-back, leaving Spurs with 10 men for the rest of the evening.
Micky van de Ven’s suspension explained after red card vs. Crystal Palace
According to a report from Football London, Micky van de Ven will now miss Tottenham’s trip to Liverpool on March 15. Because red cards in the Premier League only apply to domestic action, the Dutchman will be eligible to play against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Before the 24-year-old’s dismissal, Sarr had a goal disallowed for offside after VAR intervention. Five minutes later, Dominic Solanke broke the deadlock by toe-poking the ball into the net following impressive work on the left from Archie Gray. However, Tottenham’s lead was short-lived as Sarr equalised from the penalty spot from the subsequent pull by Van de Ven inside the box.
Jorgen Stand Larsen and Sarr added a second and third before half-time to pile the misery on Tudor’s side. The Croatian cut a forlorn figure for the rest of the game, and while his team did show some fight and energy after the break, it was not enough to stop the Eagles from winning the London derby.
Van de Ven’s sending off means Tottenham’s crisis looks set to continue in the Premier League. Having been Tottenham’s standout performer this season, the Netherlands international will be a massive miss against Liverpool at Anfield.
With relegation rivals West Ham United and Nottingham Forest picking up positive results on Wednesday evening, the pressure was on the Lilywhites to perform and beat Palace. But they came up short, and fans would tell that Van de Ven’s sending off certainly changed the entire complexion of the game.
