Cristian Romero has endured a mixed campaign with Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur’s overall inconsistency this campaign has been staggering. They have struggled in the Premier League but performed impressively in the Champions League, prior to last night’s humiliating 5-2 loss against Atletico Madrid.
Changes in management, tactical adjustments, and inability to compete have also created an environment in which several players are reassessing their long-term prospects at the club. Spurs’ appalling form in the Premier League for months sees them heading in only one direction. They have lost five consecutive Premier League games, and that, coupled with their relegation rivals West Ham and Nottingham Forest enjoying favourable results last week, means that only one point separates the North Londoners from the relegation zone.
If Tottenham go down, a mass exodus is practically guaranteed. And it has been learnt that the board are going to make some tough calls in the summer.
Cristian Romero set to be a part of the fire sale at Tottenham
According to an exclusive report from The Telegraph, Tottenham are planning to sell club captain Cristian Romero at the end of the season as part of a massive squad overhaul. The club bosses feel parting ways with the central defender may be best for all parties involved, despite him becoming the skipper only six months ago under former boss Thomas Frank.
Cristian Romero was named Tottenham captain and given the leadership role following Son Heung-min’s departure in August 2025. He even signed a bumper new four-year contract to stay at the club and repel interest from Atletico Madrid. However, the 2025/26 campaign has been one to forget for the Argentinian star.
The defender has missed six Premier League matches through suspension, with two red cards and eight yellow cards to his name this season. He has also missed a few games through injury. Regardless of Tottenham’s status next season, it is increasingly likely that they will look to cash in on Romero, with a squad refurbishment on the cards.
Atletico Madrid have revived their interest in the 2022 World Cup winner, who has cut a frustrated figure this season and has publicly expressed his unhappiness with the hierarchy over the club’s lack of ambition and planning. The report adds that by cashing in on the South American, who is valued at over £60 million, the North Londoners would generate the necessary funds to reshape a squad that has underperformed in the Premier League.
With Tottenham sitting 16th in the table and staring down the barrel, a move to a Champions League side like Atletico Madrid is expected to appeal to Romero, who is seeking a summer exit from N17.
