Igor Tudor’s brief tenure has been nothing short of a disaster at Tottenham Hotspur; since replacing Thomas Frank last month, he has lost all four of his matches in charge, conceding a staggering 14 goals in the process.
The away 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 was particularly painful. Igor Tudor made the brave call to drop first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for Antonin Kinsky, only to haul the 22-year-old off after just 17 minutes following two catastrophic errors.
Spurs trailed 3-0 within a quarter of an hour, before Robin le Normand added a fourth. Igor Tudor’s side were simply getting bullied by Atletico Madrid in every department, yet they managed to pull one back through Pedro Porro before half-time. 10 minutes after the break, Atletico Madrid restored their four-goal cushion. Julian Alvarez added his second on the night following a stunning counter-attack. The visitors scored another consolation via substitute Dominic Solanke, who pounced on Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s mistake.
Micky van de Ven opens up on Tottenham’s defeat to Atletico Madrid
It was not just Kinsky being at fault for Tottenham’s goals at the Wanda Metropolitano. Micky van de Ven also slipped on the pitch to allow Antoine Griezmann in on goal for Atletico’s second goal of the night.
When asked about his thoughts on the defeat to Diego Simeone’s side, Micky van de Ven told Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport (h/t BBC Sport):
“It’s actually a doomsday scenario. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. For our goalkeeper, it’s terrible as well, of course. You don’t wish that on anyone.
“For 15 minutes, we just conceded goals that you really can’t do anything about.”
Micky van de Ven needs to fix up his game
Van de Ven was actually the standout performer for Tottenham this season until January. The Dutchman’s form has started dipping in the last couple of months, with schoolboy errors creeping into his game. He cost his team points against Crystal Palace by pulling Ismaila Sarr in the box and getting sent off. Subsequently, the centre-back will miss the trip to Liverpool on Sunday.
Having led the team in the absence of Cristian Romero due to suspension, it is high time Van de Ven fixes up his game and starts producing the kind of performances which he’s actually become renowned for in the Premier League.
