Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero is Atletico Madrid’s top defensive target.
Tottenham Hotspur surprised their fans in August by revealing that Cristian Romero had signed a new contract extension amid strong transfer speculation.
The Spurs star was repeatedly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in 2025, with reports suggesting that Diego Simeone was in regular contact with the 27-year-old in an attempt to persuade him to move to Spain. However, he chose to remain at the club and extend his stay in North London after receiving assurances from the board and former boss Thomas Frank.
Unfortunately, things haven’t been plain sailing for both Cristian Romero and Tottenham. The Lilywhites have struggled throughout the Premier League season and now find themselves just a point above the relegation zone. From an individual perspective, Romero has endured a stop-start campaign.
The 2022 World Cup winner has contributed at both ends of the pitch, helping his team keep many clean sheets while also supplying 10 goal contributions in 29 outings. At the same time, Romero’s lack of discipline has been a big worry. He has let his team down by picking up unnecessary suspensions at crucial junctures of the campaign, with the defender recently returning to action after a four-game ban.
Atletico Madrid to make €50 million offer for Cristian Romero
Romero’s indiscipline and off-field issues have not wavered Atletico Madrid’s interest in him. The Los Rojiblancos are hoping to take advantage of the North London club’s dismal situation and lure their skipper away to the Spanish capital in the summer. Now, a new update has emerged on Atletico Madrid’s interest in the player.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are considering making a €50 million offer for Romero. Diego Simeone has made his compatriot one of the club’s priority summer signings, thanks to the Tottenham skipper’s age, experience, competitive edge and leadership skills.
Romero’s future at N17 appears uncertain at the moment. The Argentine has already etched his name into the club’s history books, having led Spurs to the Europa League trophy with a Man of the Match display in the final against Man United last season. At present, though, it appears highly improbable that the 27-year-old would consider staying at the club if they go down. Subsequently, a move away from White Hart Lane becomes the most realistic option for Romero in the near future.
The Cordoba-born star is hungry to challenge for silverware and is open to a summer move to achieve that goal. Regardless of Tottenham’s status at the end of the season, this appears to be Romero’s last season in N17. This is also because recent reports indicate that the Hotspur Way chiefs feel selling their ace defender would be best for all parties.
However, the only sticking point for Atletico could be the asking price. Spurs value Romero in excess of £60 million, but if we go down, the club will be forced to accept a lower price for the Argentine defensive wall.
